2 by tribes, as assigned by God & Moses.
After having led Israel to many key victories in the area of Canaan, Joshua helps them settle in to the Promised Land. He divides the land by tribes, as assigned by God & Moses. They are finally home!

3 Joshua 21: 43-45 43 “So the Lord gave Israel all the land
He had sworn to give their ancestors,  and they took possession of it and settled there. 44 The Lord gave them rest on every side, just as He had sworn to their ancestors… the Lord gave all their enemies into their hands. 45 Not one of all the Lord’s good promises to Israel failed; every one was fulfilled.”

4 He has promised to keep ALL of them.
Joshua 23 Joshua speaks to all the leaders of Israel, giving them encouragement and warning by reminding them that God has been faithful to keep His Promises and that He has promised to keep ALL of them.

5 Joshua 23:15 But just as all the
good things the Lord your God has promised you have come to you, so He will bring on you all the evil things He has threatened, until the Lord your God has destroyed you from this good land He has given you.

6 Joshua 23: 12-13 “If you turn away and ally yourselves with the survivors of these nations that remain among you…they will become snares and traps for you, whips on your backs and thorns in your eyes”

7 Just as the Israelites had to cooperate
with God as He fought for their freedom in gaining the Promised Land; they must now continue to love, obey, and worship Him alone if they wish to continue “living free.”

8 Joshua 24: 1-13 After Joshua meets with the leaders,
the whole nation of Israel is gathered at Shechem. He gives them a brief review of how God took the initiative to call out and save Israel.

9 Joshua gives similar encouragement and warnings to all of Israel.
They claim allegiance to the Lord alone; leading to a covenant renewal.

10 Joshua 24: 26-27 26 … [Joshua] took a large stone
and set it up there under the oak  near the holy place of the Lord. 27 “See!” he said to all the people. “This stone will be a witness against us. It has heard all the words the Lord  has said to us. It will be a witness against you if you are untrue to your God.”

11 Joshua’s “9 Stones of Remembrance”
1.) Stones in midst of Jordan River 2.) Stones on western bank of the Jordan 3.) Stones in the Valley of Achor 4.) Heap of stones at Ai 5.) Altar on Mount Ebal 6.) Stones of the Law on Mount Ebal 7.) 12 the human heart can be towards the
Having lived through and paid the cost of the sins of the “1st Generation Israelites,” Joshua knew how horribly forgetful the human heart can be towards the amazing blessings of God. So he tried to remind his people as often as he could… frequently using rituals and physical memorials to assist future generations.

13 Shortly after the covenant renewal
at Shechem, Joshua died. The people mourned… but there was still much work to do. Although they were free, there were still “enemies” and land that needed fought for/claimed (13: 1-7).

14 to fully possess it; Christians are saved
Similar to how Israel had already “claimed” the Promised Land, but still had more work to do to fully possess it; Christians are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, but still have more work to do in becoming holy like He is.

15 “Homework Assignments”
1.) Love, Obey, & Worship the Lord. 2.) Watch out for “unholy alliances.” 3.) If God has given you freedom in an area, do all that is needed to stay free. 4.) Remember God’s blessings often. 5.) Choose to serve the Lord…daily.

16 “The Book of Colossians”
