The 5 Dirty Lies of Media Monitoring
We don’t need it I can do that myself Google is the answer Online is all I need Trust PR release sites
7
Media Monitoring is unnecessary.
Lie # 1 Media Monitoring is unnecessary. The first lie is that media monitoring is unnecessary. The problem is that if you aren’t looking you won’t discover that your public reputation is not as nice as you would like. It only takes a few complaints and some trolls on Social media to be a bad reflection on your company. And sometimes bad news can become very bad for business when it is repeated in all the media outlets.
8
I should do my own media monitoring.
Lie # 2 I should do my own media monitoring. The second lie is that you should do your own media monitoring. If you want to do this properly you would have to subscribe to all the newspapers in major cities, have a broadcast monitoring service, and internet and social media service and you would need to be constantly creating alerts and searching results to find mentions of your organization. The texas press clipping bureau spends thousands of dollars a year in subscriptions for both print and online news site. And we do the work of putting together reports and providing your clips on an online database. We even mail you the newspaper clippings that no online based media monitoring company does. Rather than spend the time doing what we can do cheaper, you can use your time to do the things you do best.
9
Google Alerts are the best way to monitor mentions in the media.
Monitoring Lie # 3 The third lie is that google alerts are the best way to monitor mentions in the media. This would also apply to any search engine with automatic alerts. First of all you would have to set up the criteria and Even with what seems to the best search terms you will still receive a lot of bad results that have nothing to do with your company. This means someone has to read them and filter out the bad mentions. And From our previous misconception you know that isn’t the best use of your time. Also I know from being an online researcher that one search engine does NOT find all the mentions.
10
Online monitoring captures all the mentions, so an internet only service is sufficient.
Lie # 4 Lie number four is that online monitoring captures all the mentions so an internet only service is sufficient. This is related to the last misconception except this time you sign a contract with a company That does media monitoring but only for online outlets. This means you don’t have any connection to print, or television which have a large audience. AND The fact is online newspaper sites DO NOT have the same articles as the actual Print version. Texas press clipping bureau knows this because we actually do look at them and many print articles just don’t appear online at all so you are missing data. And incomplete data is bad data.
11
PR release websites are the best way to distribute my press releases.
Monitoring 5 Lie # Lie number 5 says that PR release websites are the best way to distribute my press releases. Internet based PR sites have grown in the digital age since it is cheap and easy to build such a site and it Is much more difficult to have a rapor with local newspaper writers and editors to get your company news into print. (Click) It is a little known fact that these PR websites use a frame of the newspaper sites So it looks like the article is appearing on the actual newspaper’s website, but it isn’t. We know this because we go to the actual newspaper website and look for the article….but it isn’t there. You maybe spending a lot of money to promote your business but if people aren’t looking specifically for that article…they won’t find it.
