Basic necessities: food, clothing and shelter Many do not have these in South Asia Skyrocketing population Will become largest populated country

4 Why are resources failing?
Population too large to support Widespread poverty and illiteracy Poor sanitation and lack of education causes disease to spread Limited health care

5 If population continues to grow EACH YEAR
India will need to: Build 127,000 new village schools Hire 400,000 teachers Construct 2.5 million NEW homes Create 4 million new jobs Produce an additional 6 million tons of food

Monsoons are WIND systems South Asia has 2 seasons Summer monsoon: moist, winds stir up powerful storms, rain June through September Winter monsoon: dry, cool, little moisture October through February

8 What does the weather do to the economy?
Rain needed to water crops However, too much rain causes flooding Can also cause droughts Threat of famine is always present People can lose homes and government cannot help South Asian countries buy food to make up what is lost from monsoons and cyclones Some have built dams and storm shelters

Weather can cause issues in politics India constructed a dam that took water from the Ganges However, Bangladesh needed the water as well Dispute ended in 1997, however proves how the weather can impact politics
