7 The Historical Benefits of Exploration
I Facilitate, You Think (Whole Group) Students will discuss the historical and current importance of space exploration, the cost of exploring space and the practical benefits of space exploration. The Historical Benefits of Exploration Successful civilizations are often the most likely to undertake the dangers and costs of exploring strange lands Why is this the case? Do you think there was something in it for them? Such civilizations sought access to distant riches, or a reliable source of something Exploration led to increased knowledge and the development of new technologies Chapter 5, Lesson 1 Courtesy of NASA/JPL.

How Knowledge Gained Through Exploration Has Enhanced Society The European voyages of discovery led to: Colonies and dozens new nation-states Globalization…what is Globalization? Chapter 5, Lesson 1 Courtesy of NASA

9 Globalization Defined
Globalization is the process of interaction and integration between people, companies, and governments worldwide. Globalization had many benefits. led to the establishment of regular trade routes that tied much of the world together in a web of commerce. The establishment of colonies opened new worlds of possibility to countless men and women in Europe Chapter 5, Lesson 1

13 Questions to Remember Which of these medical breakthroughs is NOT attributed to space science and exploration? A sum of money set aside to spend for a specific purpose. Chapter 5, Lesson 1

14 The International Space Station
What is it? What is it Purpose? The International Space Station (ISS) is a habitable satellite that was launched on October and has had continued human occupation ever since, the longest on record. It's an observatory and research laboratory in low Earth orbit with crew conducting experiments in Biology, Physics and Astronomy, amongst other things. The station orbits the Earth every 90 minutes, and in 2010 it had racked up almost 60,000 orbits, accruing a whopping 1.5 billion miles. To give you an idea of its size, in total it's about the area of a U.S. football field, and weighs over 400,000 kilograms. You can see the ISS without a telescope; the best time is the few hours after sunset or before sunrise.  Chapter 5, Lesson 1

15 How the International Space Station Will Advance Space Exploration
I Facilitate, You Think (Whole Group) Students will discuss the historical and current importance of space exploration, the cost of exploring space and the practical benefits of space exploration. How the International Space Station Will Advance Space Exploration Focus on understanding and overcoming the effects of space flight on human health This research will help make future space missions safer for astronauts Chapter 5, Lesson 1 Courtesy of NASA

16 The Long-Term Goal of Exploring Mars
I Facilitate, You Think (Whole Group) Students will discuss the historical and current importance of space exploration, the cost of exploring space and the practical benefits of space exploration. The Long-Term Goal of Exploring Mars After the Moon, the plan calls for a manned mission to Mars How long has the red planet fascinated humanity? What did astronomers think the saw on it’s surface? Necessary technology is already available—to go to Mars! According to Norman Augustine, mission to Mars will be determined mostly by NASA’s budget – a sum of money set aside to spend for a specific purpose Courtesy of NASA, Steve Lee University of Colorado, Jim Bell Cornell University Chapter 5, Lesson 1

17 The Current Costs of Exploring Space
I Facilitate, You Think (Whole Group) Students will discuss the historical and current importance of space exploration, the cost of exploring space and the practical benefits of space exploration. The Current Costs of Exploring Space NASA’s entire budget accounts for around six-tenths of one percent of the federal budget ($6/$1k or .06c/$100) Some believe that the program should be scrapped. Do you and why? It’s budget has gone up and down since 1975 but has not exceeded 1% of the total federal budget. In 2009, then Pres Obama appointees made recommendations for the US space program: It advised Congress to increase NASA’s budget by $3 billion annually to about $18 billion. Chapter 5, Lesson 1

18 Spending on Space Exploration Versus Other Spending
I Facilitate, You Think (Whole Group) Students will discuss the historical and current importance of space exploration, the cost of exploring space and the practical benefits of space exploration. Spending on Space Exploration Versus Other Spending Americans spend more on pet food, cosmetics—lipsticks and mascara, than they do to explore outer space! Keep in mind, consumer goods are consumed and once done so, there is nothing left… Space exploration on the other hand is arguably more like an investment Money spent on space tends to have lasting impacts Chapter 5, Lesson 1 Courtesy of NASA

19 The Practical Benefits of Space Exploration
I Facilitate, You Think (Whole Group) Students will discuss the historical and current importance of space exploration, the cost of exploring space and the practical benefits of space exploration. The Practical Benefits of Space Exploration NASA, developed in response to President Kennedy’s call for the United States to put a man on the Moon, have “built” an establishment of space scientists Space exploration requires broad range of disciplines: Astrophysics, biology, physiology, chemistry, engineering, and planetary geology Without the space program, the United States would have far less scientific expertise Chapter 5, Lesson 1 Courtesy of NASA

20 How Science and Technology Fuel Economic Growth
