Mid-1500’s scientists began to question traditional beliefs and develop new explanations based on experimentation.

3 Why it matters now... Questioning led to the modern scientific method... Who knows what the scientific method is?

4 Scientific Method A process to discover knowledge of the natural world. uses evidence, testing, reason, logic.. not tradition, or beliefs to answer questions

Rebirth of learning and arts Scholars began to question old ideas, birth of modern science

7 Setting the stage Meanwhile Reformation questioned religious traditions & The Church Scientific revolution changed how people viewed the world.

8 Roots of Modern Science
Medieval view: People thought the Earth was the center of the Universe: (Geocentric Theory) This was taught by the Church, Aristotle & Ptolemy...

9 A New way of Thinking Scholars began to challenge Geocentric Theory.
Scientific Revolution: Based on observation, testing. This method challenged traditional views.

10 A Revolutionary Model of the Universe (Cosmos)
Heliocentric Theory: The sun is the center of the Universe. Developed by Copernicus Today we know this is not true either.

11 Galielieo’s Disvoveries
Telescope...discover ed moons of Jupiter/ dark spots on the Sun among other discoveries. Shattered aristotle’s theory that moon and stars made of pure perfect substance.

His Book in1632: “Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems” Contradicted with Biblical view Under threat of torture he recanted.

13 scientific method A logical method for discovering things about the natural world. Based on evidence, facts, testing How is this different than the old way?

Bacon & Decartes helped to develop scientific method. Both relied on logic, reason and evidence.

The only reason we know we exists is because we can think.

16 Newton: Law of gravity Developed explanation why objects with mass attract each other. (Law of attraction) Explained by the Theory of Gravity Book: “Mathematical principles of Natural Philosophy.”
