1 Look at the compounds listed under Ionic Bonds.
Group 1 & 2 both show different compounds made by bonding different elements together. We will study 2 types of bonds. Let’s take a closer look at the elements in each compound to see what makes a compound IONIC or MOLECULAR (COVALENT). Look at the compounds listed under Ionic Bonds. List the first element in each compound. Look up the location of these elements. To what category do they belong – metal or nonmetal? List the second element in each compound. Look up the location of the elements. To what category do they belong – metal or nonmetal? Look at the compounds listed under Covalent (Molecular) Bonds. Repeat steps a & b above for this set of molecules. Based on your answers above, what patterns are you noticing?

2 MONDAY Exit Slip – PUT YOUR NAME ON IT
1. What are 2 types of chemical bonds? 2. Which bond involves nonmetals & nonmetals? 3. Which bond involves metals & nonmetals?

3 TUESDAY Exit Slip – PUT YOUR NAME ON IT
Create a table that compares ionic and covalent bonds with three traits in each column (one can be an example). Ionic Bond Molecular Bond

4 WEDNESDAY Exit Slip – PUT YOUR NAME ON IT
1. One way can you tell whether something is ionic or molecular? 2. Ionic = made of ________ + ________ Molecular = made of ________ + ________ 3. Examples: SO C3H8O NaCl NaSO4 LiNO CuF2 4. Molecular or Covalent --- ________ electrons 5. Ionic – electrons get ________ & opposite charges ____ 6. High melting and boiling points 7. Good conductivity
