Fall of Communism Created by Will, Jordan, and maybe Eric

The COld War and How it contributed
The cold war saw the tensions between communist USSR and the U.S.A rise to an all- time high. The race to berlin was on.  the U.S rushing from the west and the Soviet Union pushing hard from the east. Each country wanted the world's attention of being the army to defeat Nazi Germany. In berlin and around, atomic energy had been researched by the Germans, this was a focus of both armies. It would prove useful in becoming the ultimate world power. As both the US and the USSR poured in to Germany, they pushed to berlin. After an unconditional surrender by the Germans, in near time, Germany would become changed for decades to come and the world would be on the edge of its seat.

East and West germany East Germany was a communist country formally called the German Democratic Republic. West Germany was a democratic country formally called the Federal Republic of Germany East Germany was supported by the USSR, and West Germany was supported by the USA and Nato.

Berlin Wall The Berlin Wall was created in 1961 to separate East and West Berlin because if the people of East Berlin wanted to go to the more prosperous West, than they could simply go to West Berlin and then get a flight out to somewhere else in West Germany (like Nuremberg) than they’d be free of the U.S.S.R. “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” President Ronald Reagan.

Mikhail Gorbachev Mikhail Gorbachev was the 8th and final president of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, he took power in 1985 and was the only president born in the USSR, the rest of the presidents were born in the Russian Empire before the Communist Revolution. Mikhail Gorbachev saw that the Communist Party was losing party and decided to sell East Germany to West Germany for $60 billion, in a hope to revitalize the USSR’s economy. Perestroika: this was Mikhail Gorbachev’s reform policy of political reform within the communist party of the Soviet Union.

Ronald Reagan Ronald Reagan was an actor and president of the Screen Actors Guild twice. In he became the Governor of California, in 1970 he won reelection as Governor. In and 1976 he had unsuccessful but in 1980 he became the presidential nominee for the Republican Party. He won the presidency and had a hardline against the USSR. He lowered taxes and increased military spending, talking about a space laser to blast incoming nuclear bombs out of the sky nicknamed Star Wars.

Brian Mulroney Brian Mulroney was Prime Minister of Canada from 1984 to Brian Mulroney supported Ronald Reagan in many issues but not in the United States intervention in Nicaragua. Brian Mulroney was the first world leader to open to Ethiopia in 1987 due to it being a Marxist regime after WW2. Brian Mulroney was the first world leader to support Ukrainian independence from the USSR.

Fall of Communism Christmas day 1991 would mark the last time the soviet flag flew over the kremlin, before this, Ukraine, Georgia, Belarus, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan had all announced their independence from the Soviet Union. The three Baltic states had already separated. The revolutions of 1989 were a clear indication to the world that soon, the once mighty Soviet Union would be no more. Gorbachev thought that a prosperous soviet economy could only be with better relationships with the world, even with the united states. After the policy of nonintervention, the consequences unfolded, the eastern alliances “crumbled like a dry saltine cracker in just a few months.”  Many believe that US president Ronald Reagan was the reason the USSR fell by increasing military spending and making the USSR go bankrupt trying to keep up.

NATO Cartoon This Cartoon is trying to display that America is trying to make peace while the Soviets are ready for total war. The Soviet side has nuclear weapons and guns, while the US has soldiers but only in the back, which we believe means that they are ready but only if necessary. This is meant to show the US as the pro peace side.

PRo Russia Cartoon This would be a pro Russian Cartoon showing how the Americans became the soul world super power, and how everyone wanted to be their ally, even if they used to be aligned with the Soviet Union. This was made in Seattle by the Post-Intelligence North America Syndicate. This is pro Russian because it displays how some countries are either afraid to be on the bad side of the U.S. or wanted to be on their good side so they'd assist them in conflicts.
