Syllabus contains course objectives, credit hours, description, and other information required by accreditor. A subject matter expert (SME) looks at the syllabus and designs the course based on the objectives.

Scores in gradebook
Graded evaluations are created based on the course objectives from the syllabus. Evaluations consist of assignments, discussion questions, and quizzes. These are submitted within Blackboard and scores are entered directly into the Blackboard grade book.

The evaluations are used to create a course structure that consists of lesson folders. The content is build in the Course Content section. Each course has two course maps. A student map within Blackboard helps students keep track of what to read and do. The development map is more detailed and shows everything in the course—online content, evaluations, point values, textbook reading, etc. The development map is put together by the SME while working on the course and shows us everything we need and how to build it.

Each folder contains the informational topics, practice activities (if any) and graded items. Students can click on any of these. Evaluations are sometimes very closely tied to evaluations—you have to read something within the topic to be able to answer questions on the assignment—but this isn’t always the case.

Interactivity mostly links to more information
Topics are meant to complement information in the textbook, and give students different ways to learn. The goal is to address different learning styles (visual, auditory, etc.) and give students more practice where appropriate. Our early courses mostly have text topics, with the only interactivity being links to other sites, and even those other sites usually contain just articles.

This is a sample topic and companion activity created recently for a radiography positioning course. Video presentation is effective for visual information. Some of our existing topics are purely informational, while others have practice activities interspersed within them.

10. Software Articulate Studio Articulate Storyline
Adobe Captivate and Presenter
Articulate Studio is what I currently use. It consists of a suite of software used for presentation, quizzing, and interactivity. Storyline is an all-in-one product that also includes graphics (e.g. people in various poses). Captivate and Presenter are similar to Articulate’s suite. Presenter more easily allows for screen capture.

11. Goal
Give students content that helps them learn (i.e. DO) in an engaging format.
This is our goal, and can be challenging depending upon the type of course. Sometimes students do just need to learn information—terms and definitions—and for that, a simple matching activity can help make learning fun.
