2 Irregular Verbs When using the perfect tenses or using participial phrases, you must use the past participle (when it is irregular try “had+ a verb that ends in “n”) of the verb rather than the past tense (ends in “-ed)form of the verb. Don’t mix them up! For many verbs, the two forms are the same, as in we walked (past) and we had walked (past perfect),but for many “irregular” verbs, they are different, as in we ate (past) and we had eaten (past perfect). You should know the irregular forms of common verbs.

3 Use the handout to complete the following sentences with the correct form of the verb.
1. We would have __________ (to ride) even further if we had had the time. 2. Until now, that issue hasn’t __________ (to arise). 3. 5 Literary Devices Dialect-The language used by the people of a specific area, class, district or any other group of people. The term dialect involves the spelling, sounds, grammar and pronunciation used by a particular group of people and it distinguishes them from other people around them. Dialect is a very powerful and common way of characterization which elaborates the geographic and social background of any character. Motif-recurring structures, oppositions, contrasts, or literary devices that can help to develop and inform the text’s major themes (community, race, folklore, journey/odyssey) Theme- The theme of any literary work is the base topic or focus that acts as a foundation for the entire literary piece. The theme links all aspects of the literary work with one another and is basically the main subject. It is up to the readers to explore a theme of a literary work by analyzing characters, plot and other literary devices. (voice/silence, identity, faith, love, control)

6 Literary Devices Continued
Point of View- Point of view is the manner in which a story is narrated or depicted and who it is that tells the story. Simply put, the point of view determines the angle and perception of the story unfolding, and thus influences the tone in which the story takes place. The point of view is instrumental in manipulating the reader’s understanding of the narrative. In a way, the point of view can allow or withhold the reader access into the greater reaches of the story. (changes, what role does the narrator play) Symbols- A symbol is literary device that contains several layers of meaning, often concealed at first sight, and is representative of several other aspects, concepts or traits than those that are visible in the literal translation alone. Symbol is using an object or action that means something more than its literal meaning. (hair, pear tree, mule, horizon) Also note the author’s use of the following: personification, allusion (primarily Biblical and historical), simile, metaphor, tone, irony, flashback, plot structure, and setting.
