History of Parkinson’s
Parkinson’s disease, also known as PD, is a disease discovered in 1817 by James Parkinson. Some commonly known people with this disease are Michael J. Fox, Adolf Hitler, and Norman Panama.

Characteristics of Parkinson’s
Younger people don’t usually develop Parkinson’s disease. 60 years or older is the most common age Parkinson’s is developed. Men are more commonly diagnosed with PD. African Americans are less likely to have PD than whites.

Symptoms of Parkinson’s
You may have Parkinson’s disease if your hands shake, you have bad balance, have trouble standing or walking, or you tend to be very slow.

How Does Parkinson’s Affect the Human Body?
Parkinson’s disease is a disorder of the nervous system. Parkinson’s makes your dopamine levels low. Speech and occupational therapy may be needed as well as learning to fall down correctly.

Cures and Treatments Although there is no cure for Parkinson’s disease, doctors use medicine to eliminate or improve the symptoms of PD. One popular medicine is called Levodopa. This medicine increases the amount of dopamine in the body. After taking this medicine, Parkinson’s patients find it to be easier to move around.

How to Prevent Parkinson’s
Since there is no cure for Parkinson’s disease it is unknown how to prevent it. Some research has shown that regular aerobic exercise may reduce the risk of PD. Other research shows that people who drink caffeine get Parkinson’s less often than people who don’t drink it. We still don’t know if this can fully prevent getting the disease.

How Does Parkinson’s Affect Daily Life?
If you have Parkinson’s you may encounter having trouble doing things in daily life. You may move and talk slower than usual. Speech and occupational therapy may be needed. Some people need to learn how to fall down correctly. Clothing with Velcro and elastic make it easier to get dressed.
