7 What is a budget and why should you budget?
An estimate of income and spending If you do not know how much you need/want to spend you could easily go into debt

8 A Little Fact The average amount of debt held by people ages is $16,120 A lot of this debt starts in college with student loans Be wise and budget! Do not let your expenses overwhelm you!

9 When You Budget… Think about Routine Expenses Vs. Non-Routine Expenses
Fixed Vs. Variable Expenses Nondiscretionary Vs. Discretionary Expenses

10 Routine Vs. Non-Routine
*Routine Expenses *Something you spend money on on a regular basis *Think about these first! *Include: Housing, debt, insurance, transportation, food, health care, and entertainment. *Non-routine expenses *Something that you do not spend money on on a regular basis *Think about things that could come up *Could be “expected” or “unexpected” *Such as Christmas gifts or car repairs I would make this slide more similar to the Fixed vs. Variable Nondiscretionary Vs. Discretionary

11 Fixed Vs. Variable Fixed – Stay the same Rent Car payments Mortgage
Monthly Loan Payments Variable – Change from time period to time period Food Utilities Entertainment

12 Nondiscretionary Vs. Discretionary
Nondiscretionary = Things you must buy or pay for (needs) Food Rent or mortgage Car payments Utilities Discretionary = Things that can be avoided (wants) Vacations Entertainment Designer Clothes

13 Assignment You will have 4-5 minutes to classify the following items into routine, non-routine, fixed, variable, nondiscretionary, and discretionary by putting a checkmark under each appropriate box We will do the first 2 together, then you will do the rest with a partner Screenshot of the template here would be helpful…

15 Available Balance Check # Name of transaction/who? Money going IN Date of transaction Money going OUT

16 Make Your Own Budget For those expenses that do not apply to you, just draw a line through the box For those expenses that you are not sure about, use the “Budgeting Approximations” sheet. For those not sure on there estimate, higher is better than lower. If you want to so this on the computer, download the ‘Budget Worksheet’ from: Itslearning- Mark Finlay- Economics- Personal Finance folder to I think formatting here would be helpful. Can you borrow calculators for this? It might be easier. I’m a little worried about clarity in directions here – could screenshot the template and use arrows as well?
