“Wider Caribbean” (Regional Seas) Caribbean LME North Brazil Shelf LME Gulf of Mexico LME UNDP/GEF CLME+ Project CLME+ SAP Large Marine Ecosystems or LME’s constitute meaningful geospatial units for the adoption of the Ecosystem-Based Management approach, which is essential for sustainable marine resources use. The Wider Caribbean region, depicted in this map, largely coincides with the area covered by 3 such LME’s: the Caribbean, the North Brazil Shelf, and the Gulf of Mexico LME’s. This presentation documents how coordination among a regional seas programme and regional fisheries bodies, and other inter-governmental organizations, has been fostered in the Wider Caribbean through the support of UNDP/GEF International Waters Projects, focusing on 2 of these LME’s. These 2 LME’s are the Caribbean and North Brazil Shelf LME’s, and they will further also be jointly referred to as the “CLME+ region”. GEF FUNDING AS A CATALYST TO MEET
NATIONAL, REGIONAL AND GLOBAL TARGETS 2030 AGENDA FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT (SDG’s) GEF support for the CLME+ region through the International Waters Focal Area has thus been catalytic for the development, political endorsement and the subsequent initiation of a comprehensive Action Programme, establishing a bridge between the work programmes of regional seas and RFBs, through the adoption of the LME concept, while supporting region-wide progress towards related targets set under international commitments and initiatives such as the CBD Aichi Targets and the 2030 UN Sustainable Development Agenda. CLME+ SAP INTERIM COORDINATION MECHANISM (ICM)
Enhance regional coordination and collaboration, support oversight and integration of actions for sustainable fisheries and the protection and sustainable use of the marine environment Promote up-scaling of actions towards the CLME+ SAP by establishing and overseeing a global “CLME+ Partnership” SUB-REGIONAL GEOPOLITICAL INTEGRATION MECHANISMS REGIONAL SEAS REGIONAL FISHERIES BODIES In alignment with the call for Action under SAP Strategy 3, in 2017 the UNDP/GEF “CLME+” Project Unit facilitated the formal establishment and operationalization of a Coordination Mechanism, which membership consists of 8 of the region’s IGO’s with a key marine mandate, including the Regional Seas Programme and the 3 RFBs, as well as the IOC of UNESCO’s subregional “IOCARIBE” commission for the Caribbean. The Mechanism was formalized through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding. It aims at enhancing regional coordination and collaboration, supports oversight and promotes the up-scaling of actions towards full-scale SAP implementation and the achievement of associated regional and international environmental, fisheries and sustainable development targets and goals.
