1
Have you ever been through a wormhole?
2
I have always been fascinated by the idea that time and spend bends so you can potentially travel backwards or forwards through time.
3
The good news is that because this is the time traveller series you can go through a wormhole!
4
So fasten your seatbelts it could get a little bumpy along the way…
5
I created a video to travel back in time today using a video of travel through a wormhole that then cut into a rewind of a video portrayal of creation – going backwards from Cain killing Abel, back to Adam and Eve and then back through the days of creation to when there was nothing. It is from a DVD entitled: “The Bible: In The Beginning”.
6
Welcome to The Time Travellers Series at igniteYOUTH on Sunday mornings.
7
In the first week on the Time Travellers series you experienced a fresh revelation of GOD.
8
We saw that God is Great and Good!
9
In week two we experienced the awe-inspiring creation of the universe, the world and mankind.
10
We learnt that we made to please God, to reflect God and to serve God.
11
This week we will be travelling back in time to experience the horror of SIN.
12
Being dumped by a wave and not able to break free.
Text
13
Sin is a lot like a wave. We think we can fight against it - resist or control or get out of it. But we can't. The more we fight against it the more we are caught.
14
Moralistic Therapeutic Dualism - fastest growing religion in America says…
15
…all I have to do to be right with God is do good - have my good out weigh my bad…
16
...and God is just a Santa clause - He is far away in the universe - He does not know what I am facing.
17
But this is not the picture we get in the Bible
But this is not the picture we get in the Bible. In Genesis 2:15 God said eat to Adam that he should eat freely. God is not a mean judge or coach. He gives them everything to eat freely.
18
He said that world was created for them - but they should not eat from that one tree because it will kill them.
19
The devil asks: "Did God actually say"
The devil asks: "Did God actually say". This is the start of all sin - questioning what has been commanded. It is us questioning God.
20
The devil says: "You will be like God" - sin is not just acts but actions and attitudes and motivations. Sin is you wanting to be your own God. They de-goded God and looked to do things their own way. God, don't like the way you are doing things, I want to control my own life and be my own God.
21
A kid saying: "No, Dad". Who taught you to be disobedience
A kid saying: "No, Dad". Who taught you to be disobedience? It is born in everyone of us.
22
Salvation is refusing to be your own god anymore.
23
She saw the fruit was good to the flesh and eyes and would make her wise.
24
This is also recorded in 1 John 2:16: “For all that is in the world: the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life – is not of the Father but is of the world”. (1 John 2:16)
25
We look for something to take away our pain - drugs or alcohol or clothing or stuff or friends. Etc.
26
The basis of sin is that I want something for my flesh and my eyes
The basis of sin is that I want something for my flesh and my eyes. Something to make me look good. Where does sin come from? It is what we want with our body and eyes and our pride - when we want what someone else has. Someone to give us status.
27
The turtle in the street story
The turtle in the street story. I once drove my bicycle down a street and saw a turtle crossing the road – fearing it would get run over, I picked it up and moved it far from the road. When I drove back that way I found it back in the middle of the road.
28
When God rescues us out of something we want to go back into it
When God rescues us out of something we want to go back into it. We go right back into the location where the destruction can happen.
29
Genesis 3:7. Here we see the Horror of SIN
Genesis 3:7. Here we see the Horror of SIN. Their eyes are opened and they sew fig leaves together. They hide from God. Four things happen as a result:
30
1. They cover their nakedness - sin makes us find something to hide behind – it is something we make for ourselves. So, what is your loincloth? We all have something that makes us secure or safe - as we run from God we run to something else.
31
2. Their eyes were opened - they could not believe what they were seeing and they ended up getting blind. A kid can't crawl or walk if they are blind. The reason why we aren't moving in life - stuck in sin or habits - is that we are frozen because of our sin - blinded by our sin.
32
3. They hid themselves. When we get caught we run and hide.
33
4. They were afraid - struggled with people. Scared to death.
34
What is the response to the horror of sin
What is the response to the horror of sin? God kicks them out of the garden.
35
There is a giant gap or separation between God and Man
There is a giant gap or separation between God and Man. Man can't get up to God through their own effort. We want what God has for us but we can't get it and try find other things to satisfy us. Is there a way to get back to God?
36
At the end of chapter 3 God does something before they leave the garden. Verse 21 - he made garments of skin to cloth them. Out of animals. Something has to die so his kills an animal. Blood was spilt because of their sin. A foreshadowing of who will pay the price for sin. Jesus came to earth to save us. Like 24:30. Jesus has died on the cross and resurrected from the dead. He lived a perfect life. We can't have access to God because we are sinful. We produce death in all we do.
37
Jesus pursues people after he is raised
Jesus pursues people after he is raised. There are two people (probably a husband and a wife) walking on the road to Emmaus. They are fleeing from Jerusalem – like Adam and Eve fleeing from God in the garden. He started a conversation asked questions and listened and they came to a house and sat down and he broke bread and their eyes were opened – like Adam and Eve who sinned and questioned God and after they sinned their eyes were opened. When he broke the bread they recognized him – like when Adam and Eve were at a meal sharing an apple. Jesus goes back to the place where sin came into the world and he made it right.
38
The only way to be saved is to go back to Jesus who was broken for you.
39
Next week we will be travelling back in time to experience the wonder of CHRIST.
