3 What has worked? Low background noise High power signals
13 May 2009 What has worked? Low background noise High power signals Slow data rates Redundancy Protection of radio channel(s) Battery and powered endpoints “Unlimited” scalability Kendall Smith, Mark Thompson, Aclara RF

5 Battery Life What do utilities want:
13 May 2009 Battery Life What do utilities want: 20 year battery life 10 years is too small Service calls to replace batteries are unacceptable, endpoint should last as long as the equipment it is attached to Millions of deployed devices in service Kendall Smith, Mark Thompson, Aclara RF

6 13 May 2009 Battery Life What techniques can be used in a MAC/PHY design to allow for long battery life Fast network acquisition and association lower freq = lower power = better propagation Rx sense lower, overcome with tx power short messages ~8 octets allow one way operation Kendall Smith, Mark Thompson, Aclara RF

7 13 May 2009 To Achieve Low Power MAC changes that support the low energy devices must supported and pushed by the 4g group TG4e Kendall Smith, Mark Thompson, Aclara RF

8 13 May 2009 TG4e PAR 5.2 Scope of Proposed Standard: The intent of this amendment is to enhance and add functionality to the MAC to a) better support the industrial markets and b) permit compatibility with modifications being proposed within the Chinese WPAN. Specifically, the MAC enhancements are limited to: • TDMA: to provide a) determinism, b) enhanced utilization of bandwidth • Channel Hopping: to provide additional robustness in high interfering environments and enhance coexistence with other wireless networks • GTS: to increase its flexibility such as a) supporting peer to peer, b) the length of the slot, and c) number of slots • CSMA: to improve throughput and reduce energy consumption • Security: to add support for additional options such as asymmetrical keys • Low latency: to reduce end to end delivery time Kendall Smith, Mark Thompson, Aclara RF

11 13 May 2009 TG4g – TG4e Assuming Battery Operated Devices in initial SUN standard - then, MAC changes to TG4e relating to Low Energy operations must be completed in parallel This is a critical and urgent component of g Kendall Smith, Mark Thompson, Aclara RF

12 Spectrum PAR calls for license exempt spectrum frequency bands
13 May 2009 Spectrum PAR calls for license exempt spectrum frequency bands Countries like Canada, Japan, and the UK are allocating dedicated use spectrum for utilities Fits within the spirit of the PAR The PHY should be able to use that flexible spectrum as it becomes available Kendall Smith, Mark Thompson, Aclara RF

13 What has worked? How to achieve in SUN?
13 May 2009 What has worked? How to achieve in SUN? Low background noise High power signals Slow data rates Redundancy Protection of radio channel(s) Battery and powered endpoints “Unlimited” scalability Kendall Smith, Mark Thompson, Aclara RF

14 Suggestions Low background noise High power signals Slow data rates
13 May 2009 Suggestions Low background noise Allow operation on “dedicated” or licensed bands High power signals Slow data rates Allow flexibility in speed / range tradeoffs Kendall Smith, Mark Thompson, Aclara RF

15 Suggestions Redundancy Protection of radio channel(s)
13 May 2009 Suggestions Redundancy Allow increased range to permit economical redundancy Protection of radio channel(s) Allow operation on “dedicated” or licensed bands Kendall Smith, Mark Thompson, Aclara RF

16 Suggestions Battery and powered endpoints “Unlimited” scalability
13 May 2009 Suggestions Battery and powered endpoints Insure that appropriate MAC changes are enacted with SUN release Insure that power consuming behaviors are not mandated “Unlimited” scalability Kendall Smith, Mark Thompson, Aclara RF
