BLACK HISTORY Month Who Am I?
I am the first African American woman in space! On September 12, 1992, when the space shuttle Endeavor lifted off, I was aboard as an astronaut. My first assignment was representing the astronaut office at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. I served aboard the Endeavor as a science specialist. I speak fluent Russian, Japanese, Swahili, and English. I was born October 17, 1956 in Decatur, Alabama; my family moved to Chicago when I was three. I attended Stanford University on a National Achievement Scholarship and received a B. S. Degree in chemical engineering and a B. A. Degree in Afro-American studies in 1977. I enrolled in Cornell University’s medical school and graduated in 1981.
