1 Good morning parents! Fundamentals

2 The rationale for the removal of levels
The Problems: Depth and breadth of understanding sometimes sacrificed in favour of pace. In fact… ‘Sometimes progress is simply about consolidation’. Pupils compared themselves to others and encouraged a mind-set of fixed ability. The Benefits: Pupils - reflect on their own progress, understand what their strengths are and what they need to do to improve. Parents & carers - focus on the content of the curriculum provides clearer sense of how to support children to build and consolidate learning.

3 Teachers assess pupils against ‘fundamentals’ taken directly from the National Curriculum.

4 We Assess What We Teach

5 The Fundamentals End of year curriculum objectives are presented as yearly fundamentals.

6 All children must meet all the fundamentals of each year group.
Children are expected to achieve 85% of the yearly fundamentals.

7 By the end of year 1 they should be 2.0 – ‘Year 2 ready’.
If a child in year 1 can do 60% of the fundamentals this is recorded as 1.6. By the end of year 1 they should be 2.0 – ‘Year 2 ready’.
