2. A Brief Bio Juan Gris was born on March 23, 1887 in Madrid, Spain
He studied drawing at la Escuela de Artes y Manufacturas in Madrid and studied painting under artist José Maria Carbonero
Gris moved to Paris in 1906 and began to paint seriously in 1910
While starting out in Paris, he made a living creating cartoons for a local newspaper
He painted in the styles of Cubism and Synthetic Cubism
Gris died in Paris on May 11, 1927

He was the 13th child born (out of 14) to Gregorio González and Isabel Pérez
He had terrible asthma – he died from an acute asthma attack at age 40
He and his wife Josette had 1 son, Georges
In addition to painting and sculpting, he also designed ballet sets and costumes for Sergei Diaghilev
Before 2005, a Gris painting sold for more than $69,000,000
