11
I Pet. 2:1 Definitions Malice: “kakia”- wickedness, evil, spite, vicious disposition, the underlying principle of evil which is present, even if not outwardly expressed. Desire to injure. Zod: Wickedness as an evil habit of the mind, while “poneria” is the active outcome of the same. “Poneria” is malevolence, not only doing evil, but being evil. The endeavor to do evil to others, emanates from being inherently evil.
12
I Pet. 2:1 Definitions Deceit: dolos – a bait, craft, deceit, guile, treachery, using bait to allure (hook) people, especially those already festering in excessive, emotional pain (brought on by themselves) (deceit motivated by guile) uses decoys to snare (deceive) people which implies treachery to exploit the naïve (undiscerning) – baiting them through (with) their own greed. Zod. Bait, metaphorically and generally fraud, guile (cunning intelligence) , deceit Ant. Truth, honesty, cleanness, purity
13
I Pet. 2:1 Definitions Hypocrisy: hupokrisis – playacting, insincerity, literally refers to “someone acting under a mask”, dissimulation Zod. Generally used for flattery or evil deception. A thing God cannot tolerate, and which He is continually exposing. Idolatry is a form of hypocrisy. So is false prophecy – the saying of the thing that pleased, NOT the thing that was true. The person most deceived was the hypocrite himself but he was also a danger to the society in which he lived. A sin which glories in misleading another by smooth flatteries…it corrupts the conscience averting holiness of life. It is a foe of all truth.
14
Hypocrisy It stands in opposition to faith as it works to debase the whole man just as faith works to regenerate him. It takes away the key of knowledge. As it corrupted Judaism, it was ready to corrupt Christianity. Both hypocrisy and the resistance of the conviction of the Holy Spirit, are the negation of faith.
15
I Pet. 2:1 Definitions Envy: phthonos – a grudge, spite, strong feeling (desire) that sours, due to the influence of sin; the miserable trait of being glad when someone experiences misfortune or pain. Refers to the jealous envy that negatively “energizes” someone with an embittered mind “displeasure of another’s good; …without longing to raise oneself to the level of him whom he envies. But only to depress the envied to his own level.” Zod. Pain felt and malignity conceived at the sight of excellence or happiness. Is incapable of good and always is used with an evil meaning. Ant. Joy or delight
16
I Pet. 2:1 Definitions Slander: katalalia – evil speaking, backbiting, defaming talk Zod. Synonym is blasphemy, evil speaking, railing, defamation, condemnation, accusation, indictment This word is only used twice in Scripture 2 Cor. 12:20 Paul wrote that he was afraid he would find slander in the Corinthians
