Part I: Who, How, and Why We Worship John 4:19-24
Spirit & Truth Part I: Who, How, and Why We Worship John 4:19-24
2
John 4:24 (NLT) For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.
3
What is worshipping in Spirit & Truth?
4
Worship in Spirit and Truth means we come to God without pretense...
5
We are sinners, alienated from God (Romans 3:23, 8:7) so we must be redeemed to worship properly.
6
True Spirit filled worship always places Christ at its center and exalts Him (John 16:14)
7
Word Nugget: Hupsoo ( ὑψόω)
Thayer’s Lexicon: to exalt, to raise to dignity, to give honour and happiness God the Father & God the Holy Spirit give Christ the place of honor (2 Peter 1:17, John 5:23, Colossians 1:18) True worshippers give Christ the preeminence
8
Colossians 1:18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.
9
3 Reasons True & Spirit Filled Worship Exalts Jesus
Jesus is the God who Created (John 1:1-4) Jesus is the God who Saves (Luke 19:10) Jesus is the God who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing. ( 2 Timothy 4:1, 1 Peter 4:5)
10
Jesus is the God who creates
Without Him was not anything made that has been made (Genesis 1:1, John 1:3) All things were created for His pleasure (Revelation 4:11)
11
Jesus is the God Who saves
Jesus rescues us from eternal death (Psalm 68:20) Apart from Jesus there is no other savior (Isaiah 43:11) Jesus gives us the free gift of eternal life (Romans 6:23) Jesus saves us from the wrath to come (1 Thessalonians 1:10, Romans 5:9 & 10)
12
Jesus is the God who judges righteously
Jesus will one day separate the righteous from the wicked like a shepherd separates sheep from goats. (Matthew 25:31-46) We, believers, will all appear before the Judgment Seat of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:10) All judgement has been given to the Son (John 5:22) Jesus judges in righteousness (Revelation 19:11)
13
Can we worship incorrectly?
14
To properly worship… We must be saved from our sins and full of the Holy Spirit We must approach God on His terms, not ours. We place Christ at the center of our worship and exalt His Name
