6 Review: Crime & Punishment
British punishments include prison, fines and community service. Punishment serves different purposes. These purposes are called aims. Aims of punishments are different to types of punishment! Retribution Similar to revenge. Getting your own back on the criminal. ‘An eye for an eye’ supports this aim of punishment. Some Christians therefore think that punishments should match the severity of the crime. Reformation The offender is helped to become a better person, ‘reform.’ If reformation is successful the criminal will not reoffend. Deterrence Preventing crimes from being committed in the first place. Tend to be very harsh so others see the consequences if they choose to break the law.

Some people find themselves in desperate circumstances and feel they need to commit crime to keep up financially. If a person grows up in an environment where crime is normalised it is very easy to get drawn into a life of crime. Some murderers, for example the Yorkshire Ripper were said to be Paranoid Schizophrenics which led to them committing murder. Addiction Greed Hate cannot do without them. Addicts may resort to stealing in order to purchase the drugs their body needs. In Western countries like the UK, personal possessions and wealth are seen as signs of status. Greed can lead to crime, especially theft or fraud. Hatred can lead to violent or aggressive behaviour towards whatever or whoever the offender hates.

PRISONS ARE EFFECTIVE PRISONS ARE INEFFECTIVE Protect society from dangerous and violent criminals Prison record makes it difficult to get a job on release, this leads to reoffending. Give criminals a chance to reflect on their actions Prisons breed resentment, bitterness and revenge towards authority The government needs to show it has a tough stance against crime Schools for crime Act as a deterrent to others and ensure that the law is respected Suicide and serious assault from other prisoners are rife in some prisons Prisoners may have opportunities to better themselves e.g. gain qualifications. Offenders families suffer through no fault of their own

9 CAPITAL PUNISHMENT Religion Islam – perhaps more likely to support as it is part of Shariah law, Christians less likely to accept it due to the New Testament views on forgiveness. Some Christians may support retribution though ‘an eye for an eye.’ Also known as the death penalty. It is illegal in the UK but is still used in many parts of the world. Supporting views It gives the victim/victim’s family peace of mind It may save money on lengthy prison sentences It satisfies public opinion in some cases e.g. murderers of children Criminals choose to commit crime so should have their rights taken including the right to life If the criminal is dead there is no chance of them reoffending Rejecting views Innocent criminals may be put to death The criminal is not given a chance to prove themselves and reform Statistics show that minorities are more likely to be executed, this is unjust Some executions are inhumane and barbaric Criminals are human beings who still deserve rights, everyone makes mistakes

10 Reformation/forgiveness and the New Testament
BTs Crime & Punishment Retribution and the Old Testament “An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, a life for a life.” Deuteronomy 19:21 “Whoever shed the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed.” Genesis 9:6 Sharia law Based on the Qur’an, Hadith and Sunnah. Retribution (e.g. death penalty) and deterrence (e.g. amputation) are key aims of these laws. Short sharp punishments preferred over long prison sentences. Reoffending rates very low. Reformation/forgiveness and the New Testament Forgive ‘seventy times seven times’ Matthew 18:21-22 ‘Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us’ the Lord’s prayer. Parable of sheep and goats ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For… I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ Matthew 25:34-36
