2 History: The invention of microscopes enabled people to see details of living things that they could not see with the unaided eye.

3 Anton van Leeuwenhoek Invented one of the first microscopes used in the late 1600s.

4 Robert Hooke Another inventor of the microscope in the 1700s.
Was the first to observe and name cells.

5 Types of Microscopes: Light Microscopes Electron Microscopes
Uses light and lenses to enlarge an image of an object. Uses magnetic fields to focus a beam of electrons through an object or onto an objects surface.

6 Safety: 1. Always carry a microscope with one hand on the arm and the other hand on the base. 2. A microscope should be stored with the low-power objective in place. 3. Always bring a specimen into focus using the low- power objective. 4. Never use the coarse adjustment to focus high-power objective. 5. Use only the fine adjustment when focusing with the high-power objective.
