2 THE MICROSCOPE AS A TOOL FOR CELL RESEARCH
Once the microscope was developed, scientists were able to see and study small things. Today, biologists use different types of microscopes to explore cell structure and function. Cells can be viewed under a microscope to look for abnormalities.

3 COMPOUND LIGHT MICROSCOPE
The compound light microscope uses two sets of lenses. the objective the eye piece eg Objective lens= 40x eyepiece is =10x Total magnification x 10 = 400x

4 COMPOUND LIGHT MICROSCOPE
Part Function 1. Revolving nosepiece Holds the objective lenses 2. Objective lenses Magnify specimen; three lenses are usually 4X, 10X, and 40X 3. Stage Supports the slide for observation

Part Function 4. Diaphragm and Iris pass light and adjusts the light through the specimen 5. Condenser lens Focuses light onto the specimen 6. Fine adjustment knob Sharpens an image

Part Function 7. Coarse adjustment knob Moves the stage up or down to focus on the specimen 8. Stage clips Hold the slide in position on the stage 9. Eyepiece Magnifies the specimen, usually by 10X; single lens
