1 The Rule-breakers Class Project
TASK: As a class we are going to make a booklet all about people who have broken the law due to their beliefs. For some people on the list their actions and influence lead to changes in the law. Your job is to sign up to commit to produce one of the pages (below). When all the hard work is in, a digital copy of the class booklet will be shared with everyone. As you are therefore responsible for the learning of yourself and others, it is important that your work is both factual and of a high quality. If you have your own person in mind, that is not on the list, discuss this with your teacher before you begin your work. 2 What does your page need to include?
A title – Either a short creative title which tells the reader what they did OR who they are/were OR asks a question OR tells us the name of the person you have researched. An image of them – give their story a face! Their birthdate (and death date)– this will give the reader an idea of the context (time they lived) of what rules they could be breaking. A short summary of their upbringing and context – Where they were born, if their family/carers were/are religious, any facts about what was going on where they live/lived (possibly even globally) that is important for the reader to know, what job do/did they do, do/did they have a family If they are religious (OR do they have a known belief system) which influenced them to act and break rules – is their a particular piece of scripture/actions of a religious figure that could have given them their reason to act? Why are they a famous rule-breaker? – explain in your own words why they have been included in the class project. They might have done one big thing or been involved in something that has lead them to break the rules and they have become known for it. Have they been punished for their rule-breaking? – explain in your own words which specific rules they broke or what they were accused of and did anything happen to them because they broke the rules? EXT – Do you agree with their rule-breaking? – Based on what you found out about them do you think they broke the rules for a good reason OR do you not agree with their actions. What do you think they would do in their situation?

3 Sample 1 Name New Orleans Saints Est. 1966 State New Orleans, USA sat on the bench The New Orleans Saints are based in thriving religious context (estimated 50% Christian and 67% claiming a religion in total) and play the sport American Football as part of the National Football League (NFL). During September, following Colin Kaepernick’s refusal to stand for the national anthem, as many as a hundred NFL teams followed suit and chose not to stand but instead to sit on the bench or kneel on the pitch. The Pittsburgh Steelers (apart from one man) remained in the locker room! “I will not show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of colour“ – Colin Kaepernick Referencing the recent shooting deaths of African-Americans by police, he told NFL Media that his conscience would not allow him to partake in the pre-game ceremony. Rule Break – It is expected that everyone stands for that national anthem. President Trump called managers to “fire every player” who refuses to stand during the anthem. The New Orleans Saints: Some hometown and local restaurants refused to show the game live. Some local businesses said they will not support the team in their decision. The punishments: Colin (Protestant, Christian) who instigated the movement was not allowed to be on the pitch for the teams next fixture and has remained a free agent since the protest. MAY 2018 – “The NFL will penalise NFL teams who allow their players or staff to kneel or sit during the National Anthem, everyone in the 32 teams WILL stand and RESPECT the flag and anthem of the United States”
