The States of Matter Mod.H U.1 L.5
2
What is the Matter? States of matter – Physical forms in which matter can exist All Matter – made up of tiny particles – atoms, molecules, ions(charged atoms)
3
State is determined by…
Motion of particles Speed of particles Energy content Amount of attractive forces between particles
4
The Kinetic Theory All matter is made up of particles
All particles are in constant, random motion Go to:
5
4 Common States of Matter 2 more, not so common
Solid Liquid Gas Plasma ……………………………………………………………………………………. Bose-Einstein Condensate Fermi Condensate
6
Solids - Properties Has definite shape Has definite volume
Particles very close to each other Very strong attraction between particle Particles vibrate in place
7
1. Solids - 2 Categories: 1. Crystalline Orderly 3-dimensional
arrangement of particles in rows - e.g. salt, ice, diamonds
8
2nd type … Amorphous – Particles in no particular order or pattern -e.g. wax, rubber, glass
9
2. Liquids -Properties Have no definite shape Has definite volume
Particles close to each other No definite arrangement Weaker attraction between particles, than in solids Particles move around
10
2. Liquids- 2 important properties:
Surface tension – A Force….
12
2. Viscosity – A liquid’s resistance to flow. Which flows faster
2. Viscosity – A liquid’s resistance to flow. Which flows faster? Honey, water, syrup?
13
Liquids are compressible (Slightly)
Due to more space between the particles Liquids are used in hydraulic brakes.
14
3. Gases Also fluids Has no definite shape Has no definite volume
Particles far apart from each other Weak forces of attraction between particles Particles possess more energy Particles move around freely
15
4. Plasma No definite shape No definite volume
Particles are broken apart or ionized Gases at very high temperature e.g. lightening, fire, the stars, aurora borealis, florescent bulbs, plasma ball

5th State of Matter. Bose-Einstein Condensate 6th State of Matter
5th State of Matter? Bose-Einstein Condensate 6th State of Matter?? Fermi Condensate Find out. What are they? Write a short paragraph. Due Next class.
