Oklahoma Wheat Harvest
90% Complete as of June 19, 2018 Good harvest conditions Yields have been all over the board 10-60 bu/ac Lower yields in northern and North Central Oklahoma Quality –Overall looks pretty good Test weights- Favorable Protein 12%-13% Some reports of higher USDA crop production estimate for Oklahoma 2 million harvested acres at 26 bu/ac yield 52 Million bushel Oklahoma wheat crop Oklahoma Wheat Commission

8
Forage Production April-May Rains? Hot and Windy
Pastures are going backwards Western Oklahoma is drier Producers are looking for alternative feed/hay sources Many types of forages planted across the state in grazed out wheat acres Forage sorghum Nitrate Accumulation?
9
Factors in Nitrate Accumulation
Plant Factors Plant species Forage sorghums, millets Weeds – kochia, pigweeds, etc Plant parts Lower stem - highest nitrate Leaves -- lower Maturity Immature plants – greater potential Weather Conditions Anything that stresses the plant High heat, drought, cloudy Fertility High level of nitrogen -- greater potential
10
Diphenylamine Test Qualitative Test for Nitrates Prepared Solution
Place drop on the inner tissue of plant Blue color High Levels Send into lab for accurate levels False Positives
11
Double Crop Considerations
Herbicide History Know previous cropping system Herbicide carryover Herbicides and application dates Did it have any soil residual? How long has it been applied? Rainfall? Sulfonlyurea Herbicides
12
Planting Planting date Planting depth
No-Till may have to plant deeper to cut through the straw or residue Planting rate Row spacing and Equipment Calibration Slow Down! No-till, good residue management (watch hair pinning) needed to secure good soil to seed contact
13
Avoid hair-pinning of residue
14
Weed Management Start Off Clean and Stay Clean Weed ID Is Critical
