1 Bell Ringer Storm surges
What causes the most hurricane-related deaths? Test tomorrow – STUDY Storm surges

2 Recurring Weather

3 Recurring Weather Some weather events happen on a regular basis
These weather events are due to changes in precipitation or temperature that an area has over a period of time

4 Floods and Droughts Flood – natural occurrence when water spills over the sides of a stream’s banks onto land Caused by extended periods of above-average precipitation (thunderstorms, hurricanes, or weather fronts that move slowly)

5 Floods and Droughts Drought – extended periods of below-average rainfall (so there can be rain during a drought, just not much) Caused by large high-pressure systems in an area for a long period of time

6 Heat Waves Heat Wave – extended period of above-average temperatures
Can result from high-pressure systems in an area for a long time Few clouds to block the blazing Sun

7 REVIEW: Where is it coolest? Why?
46oC = 115oF 44oC= 111oF 42oC= 108oF 40oC= 104oF 38oC= 100oF 36oC= 97oF 34oC= 93oF 32oC= 90oF 30oC= 86oF REVIEW: Where is it coolest? Why?

8 Heat Waves Why do people complain about humid days?
Your body is cooled by sweat evaporating off of your skin and taking heat with it Humid air evaporates less than dry air The more humid it is, the warmer it feels “Dry heat” in places like Arizona

9 Heat Waves Heat Index – how warm the air feels to the human body based on the air temperature and relative humidity

10 Cold Waves Cold Wave – extended period of below-normal temperatures
Can result from high pressure systems of Arctic or continental polar (cP) air masses

11 Cold Waves Wind blows heat away from the body, so the windier it is, the cooler it feels Wind Chill – how cold the air feels to the human body based on the air temperature and the wind speed

12 Application Review: ______ pressure systems -- clear, sunny days High
_____ pressure systems -- cloudy, rainy days High or Low Pressure? _____ Heat Wave _____ Flood _____ Drought High Low High Low High

23 After the Video: If you did not finish Naming Hurricanes lab on Friday, finish this. If you did, work on Vocab Assignment. Hold onto this sheet when finished. Remember, you will have a vocab quiz on Atmosphere Vocab 1&2 on Friday! I will hand out graded quizzes. Hold onto this to help you study for your test. If you have not taken the quiz, you need to come in on Thursday SMART lunch to make it up.

24 Spend the next 10 minutes studying for your quiz by yourself
Spend the next 10 minutes studying for your quiz by yourself. There should be no talking during this. Write your name on your quiz. Do not get up while taking your quiz. When you are done, hand it in to the front basket. Pick up a vocabulary assignment. This will help you with the vocabulary words for the next part of the atmosphere unit. You may use Ch13-14 of the textbook for help. If you use a book, return it to the shelves at the end of class.

25 Extreme Weather Songs “Knock on Wood” – Eddie Floyd, 1966
