1 Happy Wednesday!  You are coming to the New World- CONGRATULATIONS  Oh… and you are the leader! Record what must be done/established… Who will you bring? How will your colony survive? What will you eat? Be as descriptive as possible!

3 Types of colonies JOINT-STOCK COMPANY: issued stock to investors to raise money(who would in return make profit). CHARTER COLONY: self-governed, and their charters were granted to the colonists as opposed to proprietors PROPRIETARY: established in territories which had been granted by the English Crown to one, or more, proprietors who had full governing rights ROYAL: ruled by the monarch

King of England granted a charter to the Virginia Company of London (1606) CHARTER is a document issued by a governing authority What did the charter do? 1. Gave the right to establish colonies in New World 2. Granted British rights to the colonists Why important!?

6 Establishing Jamestown
May 14, 1607: first permanent English colony is established Why the Jamestown location? 1. Could be easily defended from attack by sea by the Spanish 2. water to allow ships to dock with supplies 3. thought good supply of fresh water 1608: John Smith becomes leader of established council “He that will not work, will not eat.” HARSH DISCIPLINE kept the colony alive! 1610: Lord de la Warr (governor) also enforces strict, harsh discipline and a new abundance of supplies

8 Difficulties in Jamestown
Of the 104 men and boys who landed, only 38 were still alive by January 1608 STARVATION: “starving time” Less than 1/5 survive NATIVE ATTACKS DISEASE LACK OF FRESH WATER LACK OF SUPPLIES LAZINESS!

11 Indentured Servants “Free” passage to New World Work for 5-7 years

12 Headright System Headright= tract of 50 acres
New settlers who paid their own passage to Virginia were granted one headright Wealthy individuals could accumulate headrights by paying for the passage of poor individuals (indentured servants)

13 Introduction of Slavery
1619 the first slaves were brought to Jamestown Indentured servants were seen as risky and costly

14 Women in Jamestown 1620: 90 women arrive in Jamestown
120 pounds of tobacco to marry one of them Why is the arrival of women important?

15 Powhatan 1608- establish necessary trade
Powhatan also taught British to farm and survive on the land Friendly relations turn deadly -Death of Powhatan leaders, realization English are invaders looking to expand
