1 Relationships between organisms

2 Everything on Earth doesn't exist in its own little bubble
Everything on Earth doesn't exist in its own little bubble. Species interact every day. That interaction is a vital part of how organisms develop and change over time. When the Tom Hanks image displays, make sure you talk about how, even he, is interacting with the organisms around him.

3 Think about it, just today, how many organisms have you interacted with?
Could you live, grow and develop without these interactions?

4 Today we are going to learn about these interactions
They have a name, you know?

5 Interactions between organisms
Predation Competition Symbiosis Commensalism Mutualism Parasitism

6 Predation or Predator-Prey
Yes, the grass could be considered prey Predation includes all "win-lose" interactions in which one organism consumes all or part of another.

7 Competition A relationship where organisms compete for resources (food, light, water, shelter, mates, etc).

8 Symbiosis Close and dependent relationship between organisms of different species. Three types of symbiotic relationships: Mutualism Commensalism Parasitism

9 Mutualism Both species benefit (win-win relationship)
Example: Ants and acacia trees: Ants benefit from the tree’s nectar Tree benefits from the ants’ protection

10 Commensalism Orchid and tree:
One species benefits and the other species is not harmed or benefited (win-meh relationship) Example: Orchid and tree: Orchid benefits from habitat in tree Tree is not affected

11 Parasitism Tick and dog:
One species benefits and the other species is harmed win-lose relationship Example: Tick and dog: Tick benefits from food (blood) in the dog Dog is harmed from irritation and possible disease

12 Why do organisms live in symbiotic relationships?
For food Resources Habitat Protection Transportation Cleaning
