Starting the New Year Right: Listening to Students on Opening Day and Beyond
Student voices and experiences are a powerful asset when making your case for guided pathways and are crucial data when designing your college's guided pathways framework. But what are effective ways to engage students in guided pathways conversations and design? In this session, presenters will offer ideas for working with students and collecting data to inform your guided pathways efforts. November 28, :30-1:30
4
Overview Who are our Students? Student Centered Guided Pathways
Diverse voices Systematic input from students Using data we already have
5
Who are our students? Veterans Active duty military Athletes
Underserved populations Immigrants/ESL Financial Aid Recipients/EOPS DSPS First Generation Direct from High School Foster youth Homeless Job skills Re-entry students Working students Students on Academic Probation Honors students International
6
Who are our students? Single parents Part-time Full-time GED
Previously incarcerated Students by ed goals (skills-builders, certificate, local degree, transfer) Students by majors or metamajors Student leaders
7
One size does not fit all
What are common issues? What are barriers for many? How do we hear from all/most of the students? Today’s webinar is about using multiple methods of “hearing” students, diverse students, and creating immediate opportunities but also systematically incorporating student voice. Are the students underprepared or is the college student-ready? A false dichotomy Preparing for both and more Active listening followed by action

EXAMPLES Event Panels Focus groups Committees Classes and Classwork
Student Government WHAT ELSE?
9
Student Panels – Moderated panel of 4-6 students
Consider inviting a panel to your opening day or academic senate meeting to begin the new year Purpose Recruitment – Counseling & Instructional Faculty (not a single person reaching out) Diversity Methodology Content and timing – Questions Audience participation or not Benefits Challenges Palpable input Motivational Specific Current Relatively easy to arrange Positive aspects identified Time to prepare students Difficult things shared Timing Potential off-focus pile-up
10
Focus Groups – Facilitated small group discussion
Purpose Method – diverse/ homogenous Size Facilitator Motivation for participation Questions Data analysis & context Communicating findings Benefits Challenges Deeper exploration of issues Potential for diagnosis through follow-up More time for potential innovation/problem solving More time consuming Analyzing data IRB Communication Contextualization
11
Committees Pay for committee service
A paid committee Pay for individuals on various committees Student government representatives Open request Considerations (meeting times, communication, expectation) Communication Share resource on SMC student advisory board Benefits Challenges Regular and systematic Educated with purpose Reports back to student gov’t Total picture Attendance Workload Reports to? Represents? Funding
12
Classes and Classwork Most effect for general student input
Includes diverse students Communicates desire to listen Methods – simple to more complex Raising hands, clickers, online survey Engagement and communication Class assignments Examples Benefits Challenges Immediate Diverse Engaging Communicates priorities Takes class time Planning Data analysis Dispersing data Share OCC classroom assignment
13
Student Government Provides elected representation
Policy, process and the 9+1 for student governance Reports back to student body Leadership Opportunities Mentoring Benefits Challenges Process driven Shared governance model Opportunities to align goals Inclusion Status of student government Turnover Diversity Attendance
14
The Student 9+1 and Guided Pathways
Curriculum Development Student Preparation and Success Grading Policies Course/Program Initiation or Discontinuance Clear pathways and programs Guided Exploration and Progress Academic and Student Support Teaching and Learning Title 5 § Students.

Existing data CCSSE –Community College Survey Student Engagement
Datamart Local surveys Surviving Bakersfield College – facebook Sierra College asked students about college communications and how effective they were They created the HUB - Completing the Sierra College Online Application? Resetting mySierra password? Registering for classes? Accessing on Office 365? Accessing online courses? Locating and communicating with faculty? Finding a major? Understanding how to get a student ed plan? Finding necessary resources like financial aid, health center? Getting learning support like tutoring, supplemental instruction, etc? Finding a place to belong on campus like a club or group?
