Write a challenge or problem that you recently had to overcome in your life. Handout 1: Questions for Teaching Youth About Resiliency Handout 2: Unlocking the Power of Resiliency. Handout 3: Resiliency Quiz. ACTION POINTS Have students to write a challenge or problem that they recently had to overcome in their life on a sheet of paper. Distribute Handout 1: Questions for Teaching Youth About Resiliency. Use questions 3, 5, 6, and 8 to initiate discussion Distribute Handout 2: Unlocking the Power of Resiliency. Ask volunteers to read quotes on resiliency aloud Instruct students to complete Handout 3: Resiliency Quiz. Discuss and share answers. Instructor: If resiliency is defined as the “ability to bounce back, and successfully overcome risks and adversity”, what are some tools that can be used to help a resilient person to bounce back from a situation or problem that you listed on your paper?

What is Resiliency?? When people go through tough times, it’s the ability to bounce back again and again. Resiliency is a learned behavior. Simply put, resiliency is the ability to bounce back in stressful situations and recover after a crisis or adverse situation. Instructor: Who can define resiliency? Why is resiliency important in the healthcare workplace? ACTION POINTS Allow time for feedback. Instructor: Resiliency is the ability to “bounce back” from setbacks and adversity; and having the ability to cope with high levels of ongoing disruptive changes, sustain good health and energy when under constant pressure.

Take initiative Become independent Develop insight Be creative Build good relationships A good sense of humor is essential Instructor: Listed on this slide are a few coping skills that can be used to help build personal resiliency and to help support success during challenging tough times. ACTION POINTS Review and encourage students to discuss the characteristics of resilience listed on the slide.

“My Personal Stress Shield”
We’re not always at our best. Each day holds new challenges. Don’t get sucked in! Wait until the storm passes. Bottom line: Take care of yourself! ACTION POINTS Discuss “coping skills” with students. Use Handout 4. have students complete activity sheet, and share answers. Instructor: Everyday is a different day; therefore, it is important to have to have some tools that can be used to help to become more resilient. This slide focuses on four concepts that can be considered as “coping skills”. How can the use of these skills assist you in coping with challenges and adversities? Resilience helps to deal with stress. Everyone handles stress differently, but it is important that you develop positive coping skills to deal with stress and challenges as they arise.

Handout 4: Seven Resiliencies for Teens Handout 5: My Stress Shield Distribute Handout 4: Seven Resiliencies for Teens – encourage students to incorporate the strategies provided in their quest to strengthen personal resilience. Distribute Handout 5: My Stress Shield – direct students to complete the activity sheet. Ask for volunteers to share their answers.

CAUTION: Self-Talk can be Hazardous to YOUR Health!
“Self-Talk” are the messages we give ourselves. Eliminate “stinkin’ thinkin’.” What pulls you down? What lifts you up? ACTION POINTS Instruct students to list things about themselves that they don’t like, and would change about themselves, Distribute and review Handout 7: Choose to Think Positive Thoughts to support discussion on “self-talk”. Instruct students to compile a second list of the things that they like, and would not change about themselves. Instructor: “Self-talk” is what we say to ourselves about who we are, what we look like, how well we do what we do. It can either strengthen or weaken your resilience because through “self-talk” we can build or break our personal confidence.

Handout 6: Choose to Think Positive Thoughts Handout 7: Six Stages of Attitude Change ACTION POINTS Distribute and review Handout 7: Choose to Think Positive Thoughts to support discussion on “self-talk”. Instruct students to compile a second list of the things that they like, and would not change about themselves. Instructor: “Self-talk” is what we say to ourselves about who we are, what we look like, how well we do what we do. It can either strengthen or weaken your resilience because through “self-talk” we can build or break our personal confidence.

10 Tips to Build Resilience
Talk with your friends (even your parents). If something bad happens, go easy on yourself. Make your room a “Hassle-Free Zone.” Stick to a routine during stressful times. Take care of YOU! Take control – one step at a time. Express yourself by keeping a journal or diary. Volunteer. Keep your perspective. Tune out stresses – like television, newspapers, etc. ACTION POINTS Review the listed tips to build resilience. INSTRUCTOR: Which of the tips listed do you think would work best for you? Why? Communicate a “helpful” attitude.
How Healthcare Providers Use Resiliency to Help Others & Themselves Bounce Back ? Communicate a “helpful” attitude. Focus on a person’s strengths and ask “How can WE overcome this problem … TOGETHER?” Be patient. Bounce back and help your patient to do the same. Empathize with your patients (put yourself in their shoes). Be of Service….. That’s your job! ACTION POINTS Review slide 9 & 10 Discuss the relevance of resiliency in the work force and how it relates to characteristics of a health care professional

Relax and engage in activities you like. Monitor your health.
Volunteer to help. Be comforting; always remember that your patient is frightened of what may lie ahead. Do your best to put them at ease. Relax and engage in activities you like. Monitor your health. Maintain a hopeful outlook. Nurture a positive view of yourself. Maintain as sense of humor. Learn from past experiences. Spend time with others. Practice your faith/meditate. “It’s All In the Bounce” Random Acts of Kindness
Communicate a “helpful” attitude. Focus on a person’s strengths and ask “How can WE overcome this problem … TOGETHER?” Be patient. Bouncing back from any bad circumstance takes time. Volunteering is fun. Service Projects are G-R-E-A-T. ACTION POINTS Discuss the value of service and giving back. Encourage students to volunteer in their community, at school, or church. Instructor: Resiliency focuses on identifying a solution versus focusing on the problem but on the solution. When time is taken to help others, it can help to place personal problem and challenges into perspective. It also provides opportunities to use and strengthen coping skills while making and impact within your community.

Reinforce the importance of understanding the resilient person utilizes positive thoughts and positive talk as a tool.

Never Give Up! Resilience is a journey.
So, when the going gets tough…, the skills you learn will help during the bad times and sustain you in good times. Instructor (closing statement): The development of resiliency is an ongoing process that continues to improve over a lifetime. It is important to learn what works for you through your experiences. {Please review this quote with students} Remember that what is right about you. is more powerful than anything that you know is wrong.
