Objective: Determine Lincoln’s purpose in The Gettysburg Address and how he uses rhetoric to advance his claim. Let’s learn about rhetorical devices. Here are 2 rhetorical devices: Parallelism is: _______________________________________. Repetition is: __________________________________________. Rhetorical devices are specific techniques writers use convey ideas and enhance arguments. There are hundreds of rhetorical devices, but only 3 rhetorical appeals. Rhetorical devices are different from rhetorical appeals. using the same grammatical structure repeatedly to enhance the argument using the same word or phrase to enhance the argument Is it parallelism or repetition? Is it parallel structure or repetition? “I want to sing, to dance, to live my life to the fullest.” “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”

Let’s view a reading of The Gettysburg Address to get a feel for it. What was Lincoln’s purpose? How many times did you hear parallelism? How many times did you hear repetition?

Prepare your C Notes by writing the Obj & EQ. 4. In the Questions column, write Logos, Pathos, & Ethos, spacing them out evenly on the front. 5. In the Questions column on the back, write parallelism & repetition, evenly spaced. 6. Draw a vertical line in the middle of the Notes section. 7. In the left side of this line, write evidence that shows each type of rhetorical appeal and device.
