1 Newton’s 2nd Law Physical science ppt #2 2017

2 The only way to overcome inertia, is to use FORCE.
Check out the picture. If you want to throw the 2 objects the same distance, how would the amount of force you need to throw them compare? If you want the two objects to go the same distance, you will have to throw the 2 kg mass with 2 X (double) the force as the 1 kg mass.

3 Now what if you threw them with 2 different speeds?
What if you threw the 1kg ball 40 m/s and the 2 kg ball only 20 m/s. Would the amount of force you use to the throw the ball be the same? Why?

4 Force varies with change of mass AND change of speed.
The difficulty of making a thing move not only depends on the amount of mass it has, but also on how fast you want the object the move.

5 Newton’s 2nd Law of Motion:
FORCE = MASS x ACCELERATION

6 Acceleration Acceleration: The rate at which you CHANGE speed or direction. Speed up Slow down Change direction.

7 Conclusion Doubling the mass with double the force required to move an object. Double the speed at which the object travels ALSO doubles the amount of force required to move an object. Mass, speed, and inertia seem to be all CONNECTED somehow.

8 Newton’s 2nd Law V_I

9 Gravity: Gravity is a FORCE that accelerates objects
The rate of acceleration of gravity on EARTH is 9.8 m/s2 Any two objects when you drop them will accelerate at the same rate unless the amount of air friction they experience is different.

10 Take a look: Can you tell the object is accelerating (speeding up) as it falls?
