Teens & Sex: What’s Going On?
3
10 Million Infections/Year
Young people under the age of 25 represent nearly half of all Americans infected with STIs in a given year. They’re at higher risk because there are more susceptible in some cases, they may have multiple partners in a short period of time, They don’t always get recommended STD tests and may have difficulty getting to a clinic when they want or need to. Chlamydia and Gonorrhea Among Adolescents
Disproportionate impact on minorities Asymptomatic Consequences of untreated infection Infertility; problems in pregnancy Increased HIV risk Increased risk of transmitting HIV Eyes and joints can be affected Chlamydia and gonorrhea are especially concerning to those of us in public health because so often people don’t know they’re infected. (Only about 10% of men with chlamydia and 5 to 30% of women will develop symptoms; gonorrhea: symptoms esp for women can be very mild and easily confused with bladder or vaginal infection). And young adults are particularly at risk due to biological conditions, rapid changes in romantic relationships (they may move from one monogamous partnership to another more rapidly than the infectivity period of chlamydia and unknowingly transmit the bacteria to a new partner. Those who do develop symptoms may not until several weeks after exposure.) and inconsistent use of barrier methods like condoms and dental dams. Untreated or repeated infections can seriously threaten the lifetime fertility—so these are infections with potential life-long consequences. We also know that being infected with any STD makes a person more vulnerable to HIV infection.
