2. Instrumental Schedule
Students receive 30 minute group lessons once per week.
Lesson times rotate so that students miss the same academic class once every 10 weeks.
Your child’s band/strings schedule will be posted in every homeroom and outside of the instrumental room.

4. Woodwind Instruments  Flute  Clarinet  Saxophone
Originally made of wood, these instruments produce their sound when air is blown over a wooden reed, causing the reed to vibrate, or when air is blown over an opening, causing the air in the instrument to resonate.
The woodwind instruments offered are:
 Flute
 Clarinet
 Saxophone

5. FLUTE Earliest known musical instrument. Can be constructed from
metal or wood.
Sound produced by blowing
air across a hole, similar to the
way in which the air in a
bottle resonates when fast
air moves across the top.

6. CLARINET Traces back to the Middle Ages. Developed from an instrument
similar to the recorder, called the
Chalumeau.
Usually constructed from
wood or plastic.
Sound produced by
blowing air over a wooden
reed, causing it to vibrate.

7. SAXOPHONE Constructed from brass, yet played with a reed.
Developed in 1846 by
Adolphe Sax.
Projection of a brass instrument
with the agility of a woodwind.
Now popular in jazz music, the
sax first gained popularity in
military bands.

8. Brass Instruments  Trumpet  Horn  Trombone  Baritone  Tuba
Traditionally made of brass, these instruments produce sound when air is blown through closed lips, producing a “buzzing” sound which creates vibration within the air column of the instrument.
The brass instruments offered are:
 Trumpet
 Horn
 Trombone
 Baritone
 Tuba

9. TRUMPET One of the oldest musical instruments, dating back to
1500 B.C.
The earliest trumpets were
signaling instruments used for
military or religious purposes.
Bright, penetrating sound.

10. HORN Also known as the French horn, however its origin is German.
Made up of more than
20 feet of coiled brass
tubing.
The original horn was a
ram’s horn, known as a
shofar.
Dark, rich sound.

11. TROMBONE The slide allows the player to extend the length of the
instrument, lowering the pitch.
The only instrument offered in
band that does not use valves or
keys to change notes.
Bright, majestic sound.

12. BARITONE Second largest instrument in the brass family next to
the tuba.
Made of 9-feet of brass tubing.
Rich, mellow sound.

13. Tuba The largest and lowest-pitched instrument in the brass family.
Full-sized tuba is approx.
18 ft of brass tubing.
Dark, heavy sound.

14. Percussion Instruments
Instruments that are sounded by striking or scraping with a beater, by hand, or by striking against another instrument.
Percussionists must learn how to play many instruments. Some of these include:
 Snare Drum
 Bass Drum
 Bells
 Cymbals
 Tambourine
 Triangle

15. IMPORTANT!!!
Do NOT choose an instrument because a friend wants to learn the same instrument.
Do NOT choose an instrument because you think only girls or boys can play certain instruments – this is not true!
Do NOT choose an instrument based on its size.
Choose an instrument because you like how it sounds.
