3 What is Imperialism? The word “Imperialism” comes from the word Empire. So Imperialism is building an empire. Empire: one government takes control of one or more other pieces of land in order to make its kingdom wealthier or more powerful. Empire building goes back to the beginning of civilizations in Mesopotamia.

4 What is New Imperialism?
The United States and European countries spread to regions of the world that they considered “uncivilized” and started to control the government, economics, and social structure of these regions. Areas colonized: Africa Southeast Asia India

8 Why was there New Imperialism?
They got new resources that were needed because of industrialization. They wanted but did not get new markets to sell there goods. They felt superior (Social Darwinism) They wanted to spread Christianity through missionaries. Competition against the other European powers.

10 Why was there New Imperialism?
Why move into each of these regions of the world? Africa – Ivory, copper, tin, gold, diamonds, cash-crops (peanuts, palm oil, cocoa, and rubber) India – Plantation crops (tea, indigo, coffee, cotton, jute), Opium Southeast Asia – Plantation crops (sugar cane, coffee, cocoa, rubber, coconuts, bananas, pineapple)

13 What is Social Darwinism?
Charles Darwin – Scientist who created the idea of evolution. Evolution from Darwin’s point of view – living things adapt based what allows for a better survival rate (Survival of the Fittest). Social Darwinism is when that survival of the fittest idea is applied to society. European people were better because they had become more advanced. Thus, Europe felt the responsibility to help the “savages” of the world become more advanced. Capitalized on nationalistic feelings.

16 How did they Imperialize?
European countries used their new technology and improved weaponry to overpower less advanced countries. Direct Rule – The European country took over the government of the colony and removed the old government Indirect Rule – The European country allowed the old leaders of the colony to remain in power but imposed their wishes and decisions on these leaders. Often used the idea of protectorates in which they “protected” a kingdom from another Imperial power and used this protection as a way to control the colony.
