1 I can identify and interpret the demographic transition theory model
I can identify the trend that occurs with the birth rates and death rate as a country develops. Best guess What is population? What is population density?

2 What might happen if an extra 500 students showed up to school tomorrow?
What problems might that present? What might happen in the classrooms? Would there be enough resources like books and desks for these students? What about lunch? Would there be enough room for all students to eat in the lunchroom? Why might it be important for a country to be able to predict population growth?

3 Demographers??? What do Demographers do? WHY?
Demographers try to predict the growth of populations so that nations can plan ahead so that they can avoid problems that may occur without such planning, like the school example “How might social scientists (demographers) predict population growth? What information might they want to gather? Would it matter if there was a pattern to population growth? This lesson, we are going to be investigating: The pattern to population growth?

4 Groups Analysis sheet Work with your group members to analyze the graph discuss and answer the questions that follow. Try to reach a consensus on your answers. Any volunteers to explain the pattern you see.

5 1. Identify the places on the graph marked by the biggest change.
2. How would you explain the changes on the graph using both birth rate and death rate? 3. Where on the graph is the place where the greatest population growth occurs?

6 Terms to Know More developed nations
A country with a highly developed economy, including significant industry and technology. less developed nations fairly poor country with an agriculturally-based economy demographic transition theory/model describes the stages countries go through as birth and death rates change over time What is a theory????? Who's population is growing faster? Who has a larger population?

7 Do you remember this chart? What is it telling us?
Why do you think this is happening? The Demographic transition theory/model tries to explain this.

8 Demographic transition theory/model
What is shown on Graph? Source: Demographers have developed a theory or model that illustrates stages countries tend to go through as birth and death rates change over time due to a series of social and economic factors.

9 What does this graph tell us?
By the end of todays class you will be able explain why this is happening Source: demographic transition theory/model- describes the stages countries go through as birth and death rates change over time

10 1. Describe the birth and death rates as ‘high’ or ‘low.’
Red is birth rate Green is death rate What do you think?? Source:

11 Stage 1 Birth rates and death rates are high. 2. What do you think is the profession of most people in stage 1? Source: Countries or regions in Stage 1 are agriculturally based and birth rates are due to the desire for large families. What benefits come from having many children?

12 Birth rates and death rates are high.
High birth rates serve practical purposes: labor for farm work support for elderly parents Source: 3. What factors probably cause high death rates in Stage 1?

13 Birth rates and death rates are high.
Stage 1 Birth rates and death rates are high. High birth rates serve practical purposes: labor for farm work support for elderly parents Poor health and harsh living conditions cause the high death rate. Source: 4. During STAGE 1 how do the birth and death rates compare?

14 Birth rates and death rates are high.
Stage 1 Birth rates and death rates are high. High birth rates serve practical purposes: labor for farm work support for elderly parents Poor health and harsh living conditions cause the high death rate. Birth rates and death rates are about the same. Source: 5. What is the graph showing regarding population growth during this stage. Very little population growth

15 Why do you think the death rate is falling?
6. During STAGE 2 what is happening to the death rate? Death rate is falling Source: Why do you think the death rate is falling?

16 Stage 2 Death rates begin to drop because of improved living conditions and health practices. How can improved living conditions and health practices cause the death rate to drop during this stage. What would improve these things? Source: The United States and the countries of Europe this stage coincided with the Industrial Revolution. The improvements during this time period resulted in a rise in manufacturing and many improvements in technology which affected the death rate. 7. During STAGE 2 what is happening to the birth rate?

17 Birth rates remain high.
Stage 2 Birth rates remain high. Why do you think the death rate drops so much more than the birth rate? Attitudes and beliefs about family size are related to many social and cultural factors. Even though large families are not needed during this stage it often takes long periods of time to change attitudes. Therefore, the birth rate does not drop as quickly. Source: 8. During STAGE 2 how do the birth and death rates compare? What is the graph showing regarding population growth during this stage?

18 Describe what is happening to the death rate and birth rate in stage 3
Source: 9. During STAGE 3 how do the birth and death rates compare? 10. What is beginning to happen to population in Stage 3

19 Birth rates move downward – eventually catching up with death rates.
Stage 3 Birth rates move downward – eventually catching up with death rates. Source: What does the graph shows regarding population growth during Stage 3

20 11. Describe birth and death rate in stage 4
Source:

21 Birth rates and death rates nearly the same again.
Stage 4 Source: Birth rates and death rates nearly the same again.

22 Birth rates and death rates nearly the same again.
Birth rates and death rates at low levels.. Source: 12. what does the graph shows regarding population growth during Stage 4. There will be little population growth since the death rates and birth rates are nearly equal. The United States and other more developed countries are at Stage 4.

23 13. what stage do you think less developed nations are at on the graph?
Death rates have begun to fall in these countries because of improved health and sanitation but birth rates are still high. Many of these countries are still agriculturally-based and large families are still desired. Do you think the less developed countries will follow the same pattern and go through the same stages as the more developed countries like the United States

25 ACTIVITY: The Impact of Family Size
Stop and Jot in your GLIN: How does having one more child change the rate of population growth?
