Effects of Smoking Respiratory – Chronic Bronchitis – bronchi are irritated and cilia become damaged. Tar builds up and causes chronic coughing and mucous secretion. Emphysema – air sacs in the lungs are destroyed which affects oxygen absorption, cause you to breath faster Lung Cancer Circulatory – nicotine speeds up heart rate, constricts blood vessels which decreases blood circulation, causes plaque to build up in ateries, raises blood pressure, and can cause heart attacks and/or strokes
