Sphere of Influence Sphere of influence- a section of a country where a foreign nation enjoys special rights and powers Europe and US attempted to expand their spheres of influence around the world

Hawaii US had economic interests in sugar cane and fruit in Hawaii
Queen Liliuokalani opposed the renewal of agreement between the US and Hawaii She wanted to reestablish the power of the Queen She was overthrown by the US and the US annexed Hawaii Used for economic gain and military base

The US and China Many European powers had spheres on influence in China Open Door Policy- Policy of the US to allow any country to trade with China including the US Boxer Rebellion- secret movement in China that opposed western influence Attacked foreign embassies but was eventually defeated

Spanish-American War Spanish-American War- Conflict between Spain and the US over territory controlled in Latin America Took place over 2 months in 1898 Swift American victory

US supported Cuba De Lome Letter- Letter from Spanish diplomat calling President McKinley weak Greatly angered the Americans Yellow Journalism- Journalists who used outrageous headlines to encourage war with Spain USS Maine explosion- Ship located off coast of Cuba explodes No one knows who did it Us blamed Spain

Panama Canal Roosevelt believed building a canal that connected the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean would help the US Through Roosevelt’s use of naval force, he helped Panama achieve independence from Columbia which granted the US access to building the canal

The US and Mexico The Mexican Revolution- Brutal dictator Victoriano Huerta took control of Mexico Huerta’s brutality went against Wilson’s “Moral Diplomacy” Wilson sent in troops Pancho Villa and a group of guerilla fighters attacked American town in response Wilson sent in General John J. Pershing to track down Villa but was unsuccessful Greatly damaged US image
