1 Day 1: Using Scatterplots in Reports
IV.A Student Activity Sheet 1

2 Remember these Questions?
Univariate vs. Bivariate Data

3 Consider the graph Who are the subjects? Single tax filers
What are the variables of interest? Taxable income and tax owed

4 Consider the graph Finish the sentence:
A single person with $10,000 in taxable income plays about__________ $1000 in taxes

5 Consider the graph Finish the sentence:
A single person with $50,000 in taxable income plays about__________ $9000 in taxes

6 Consider the graph Answer the same questions from #1 but with this graph. Who are the subjects? What are the variables of interest?

7 Consider the graph A head of household with $50,000 in taxable income and 1 child pays about ______________.

8 Consider the graph A head of household with $50,000 in taxable income and 4 children pays about ______________.

9 This is an example of positive association.
Consider the graph A person with higher income pays__________ A person with lower income pays__________ This is an example of positive association.

10 This is an example of negative association.
Consider the graph A person with fewer children pays__________ A person with more children pays__________ This is an example of negative association.

14 To Analyze a display of Bivariate Data
Form Direction Relative Strength

15 Form

16 Direction

17 Relative Strength

18 Correlation vs Causation
When looking at Bivariate Data, we are studying Correlation. But Correlation does not imply causation

19 Correlation or Causation?
A recent study showed that college students were more likely to vote than their peers who were not in school. Mr. Duncan noticed that there was more trash in the hallways after 2nd period than 1st period. You hit your little sister and she cries.

20 Positive, Negative or No Correlation?
The number of hours you work vs. the amount of money in your bank account? The number of hours workers receive safety training vs. the number of accidents on the job. The number of students at Chattahoochee vs. the number of pet iguanas in Atlanta.

21 Positive, Negative or No Correlation?
The number of heaters sold vs. the months in order from February to July The number of rice dishes eaten vs. the number of cars on I-285 throughout the day. The number of calories burned/lost vs. the amount of hours walked
