4 What is an FBA? What is the function of the behavior Why do we care?
How can we use this information to change the behavior? Do we need to pair a behavior plan with instruction?

5 What is an fba? An FBA is a systematic method for collecting information about the FUNCTION that challenging behaviors serve for individuals, as well as identifying target behaviors that need to be changed. An FBA does not “fix” the behaviors, however it guides the individuals working with the child in implementing interventions that can help manage the challenging behaviors that are being observed. Involves a variety of methods: direct observations, interviews, data collection, checklists, and record review. Information is gathered from a multitude of individuals that interact with the student. Results of the FBA guide the development of a Positive Behavior Support Plan (PBSP)

6 What are the functions of behavior?
There are only 4 functions of behavior: To gain social attention To escape or avoid something Sensory or self-stimulation To gain access to activities or tangibles

7 Why is knowing the function of the behavior so important?
Once we determine the function of the behavior, then we are able to determine WHY the individual is engaging in that behavior. Determining the function, then allows us to develop interventions to use to decrease the target behavior. Example: A student in a classroom is engaging in calling out behaviors throughout the school day. After observations and data collection, analysis of data found that the student calls out primarily during whole group instruction in order to gain attention from the teacher. Knowing the function, allows us to not only develop interventions, but also know what to NOT reinforce.

8 What is a pbsp? The Positive Behavior Support Plan (PBSP) is a plan developed based on the results of the FBA. It includes the following: Measurable Goal focusing on Replacement Behaviors Antecedent Strategies Strategies to be implemented on a consistent basis in order to stop the behaviors before they start Replacement Behaviors Socially acceptable behaviors to be taught that are incompatible with the challenging behaviors Consequence Strategies Interventions to use when the student exhibits both target and replacement behaviors Interventions will focus on reinforcement of replacement behaviors

9 What is a PCA? What does a PCA do? What is their training?
How is this staffed? How will I know if it is working? When will it be time to reduce services?

10 Social Skills Instruction
What skills are taught? Who decides what my child needs? How will we know if it is working? When is it time to discontinue? Is this the same as “lunch bunch” groups in the building?

11 Outside Services What services are available in the community?
When is it time to get this kind of help? Who can help me navigate this system? What is medical ACCESS?

12 QUESTIONS? Any questions?
