The futuristic station of Afragola (Naples), also renamed "Porta del Sud", is an important railway junction designed to speed up the connections between North and South Italy and it is conceived as a bridge crossing and connecting the high speed tracks. The station is designed as an architectural system with a sinuous and "organic" articulation - following the typical style of the Anglo-Iraqi archistar Zaha Hadid - which calls to mind the image of a running train. It consists of a soft volume made of about 350 meters in concrete, metal and glass. Sample text (high level project pitch) STRANDBADKIRCHBICHL is a visionary design project involving the construction of a new office building in a remote mountain region of Austria, with a design which reflected the crashing waves coming in from the nearby beach. Great technical skill and knowledge of interior systems was required in order to optimize lighting, acoustics and sound absorption within a very complex curved shaped structure which would not naturally provide this level of performance. This presentation will also be used on the book and on the website to present your project.

The particular shape of the station fulfills a dual function: a pedestrian tunnel connecting the various quays and an element of continuity between the railway and the surrounding landscape, able to put in close relation the two sections of territory that extend to the sides of the tracks.

The accesses to the station located at the edges of the "bridge" convey the flow of passengers to the central atrium, where the ticket office and the waiting room are located, and then direct it to the tracks on the lower floor or to the shopping center at the upper level, through a suggestive system of stairs and mobile ramps perfectly integrated into the shapes of the building.

The large skylight on the gallery and the large windows of the passenger lounge - designed according to bioclimatic criteria for direct sunlight control - testify the attention paid to natural light and the precise will of the planning to make the complex permeable and open to the outside.

In addition to fire partition walls, drywalls and ceilings have been created with standard Gyproc plasterboards and Gyproc Flex 6 slabs, specially curved to obtain the desired shapes and to recall the sinuous and «organic» pattern that characterizes all the architectural lines of the building. Gyproc Flex 6 have been screwed on specially calendered metal profiles and in some cases act as a support for an elegant white plastic coating.

Key challenges (write a max. 50 words paragraph)
e.g. Budget, Time, Space, Technical challenges before and during installation/application (Development of a new solution…) Time was the worst enemy, due to the fact that the opening event was early scheduled because of the presence of the major offices of Italian politics Very high walls, with particular curved shapes. The installer had to study ad hoc structures to respect the planned project. Sample text Acoustics and light are the dominating elements in this project. The challenge was to allow maximal use of natural daylight using an unusually large funnel and integrating artificial lighting to complement natural light. The design however also had to provide an excellent level of acoustic performance in a challenging large open plan structure with high windowed ceilings. In addition to a combination of acoustics, sound absorption and light, there was particular emphasis on architecture and functionality through to the final finishing coating (Q4 surface quality) in order to meet the rigorous project standards.

Main Saint-Gobain products and systems used
Fire protection / Gyproc Fireline, Lisaflam and Lisaplac – Class A1 and EI 120 Escape routes and technical rooms in particular Stability / Wallboard, Fireline + Metal stud – Mechanically validated wall lining Atriums and interior common spaces - Aesthetics / Gyproc Flex 6 – Particular curves Very short project deadline was made The whole project Key achievements?

Key achievements Explain why you succeeded in this project Close collaboration between contractor, project & structural consultant and Gyproc in studying the appropriate solutions to satisfy the design requirements, in terms of both aesthetics and performance. Sample text Project delivered to challenging budget and time schedule Discussion throughout the process with the architect to optimize each design phase. Final result combines high standards for design / aesthetics, acoustic comfort, and optimal levels of natural daylight.
