Location South Africa Located off the Hout Bay Harbor in a remote location Due to land topography, easiest to get there by boat, not foot.

History First discovered in the 1980s by Pierre De Villers and Peter Button. The two paddled out into the waves from shore. Due to an unsuccessful first big wave contest, people failed to believe Dungeons was a big wave hot spot. It wasnt until 2003 did Dungeons start to pick up around the world as a big wave spot.

Red Bull Big Wave Contest Most famous for the Red Bull Big Wave contest. Has been running for about 10 years Only 97 days of contestable waves 2 Champs are Sean Holmes of South Africa and Greg Long of California

Waves The waves usually reach over 8 feet. Typically swells reach 15 feet and over Best swells come from the SW

Break Type Bottom Bathymetry are reefs Dungeons Reefs are what ocean swells hit first When winds blow from the NW it creates more frequent groundswells Breaks are known as right-hand breaks Best part of the break to surf is the slab, where the wave barrels.

Swell Predictions for Nov 1st Swell direction is out of the South, South West. Greatest swell energy is predicted to hit 3 days from November 1 st and continue into the next day Predicted winds are strong from the West Predicted wave heights are around 16-20 feet

Equipment Surfboards Best size is usually around 10 feet but mainly due to preference Wetsuits Water has never been below 60 degrees but can be cold Wave runners For towing in

Cautions Thick kelp beds may pose a problem to surfers who wipe out Sea life, like the Great White Shark that feed in the area on local seal colonies. Of course the power of such enormous waves.
