Goal for lesson: I can describe how a Sedimentary rock is formed.

I’ll know I’ve got it when…
Goal for lesson I can describe how a Sedimentary rock is formed. Today I am… learning about the composition of Sedimentary rocks. So that I’ll be able to… understand how they are classified. I’ll know I’ve got it when… I can describe how they form.
4
What is a Sedimentary Rock?
A rock that forms when sediments are compacted and cemented together.
5
Sediment is material that is broken down by processes of weathering.
What is sediment? Sediment is material that is broken down by processes of weathering.
6
Sedimentary rock formations
Weathering: When a rock breaks into fragments. Erosion: The moving of materials. (Shapes the Earth’s landforms.)
7
The Grand Canyon is an example of stream erosion through rock.
8
As layers of sedimentary rock are deposited, the layers become compressed or compacted.
9
Clastic Sedimentary rock
These particles may have originally been from igneous rocks, metamorphic rocks, or even other sedimentary rocks. These are made up of pieces of pre- existing rocks / minerals.
10
Dissolved minerals separate out of the water and form a glue.
Chemical Sedimentary rocks Dissolved minerals separate out of the water and form a glue.
11
Organic Sedimentary rocks
Forms from the build-up of organic debris (Ex. leaves, roots, or other plant/animal material.)
12
Where are Sedimentary Rocks formed?
Sedimentary Rocks are formed on or near the Earth’s surface.
13
Layers of Sedimentary Rock are called strata.
14
Examples of strata
