1 Architect’s Scale

2 Standard Students will demonstrate the ability to read and draw using the proper scale.

3 Never, Never Rules Never draw a line using the edge of the scale Never mark on the scale Never hit the scale on anything Never touch the compass to the scale

4 Full Size – 16 Side of the Architect’s Scale
2” = 2” Every line equals 1/16” Start by finding the whole number on the scale and then find the fraction

5 Full Size Practice - measuring lines full size
1 2 3 4

6 Half Size – 16 Side of the Architect’s Scale
Can this drawing be created full size if typical paper is 8-1/2” x 11”?

7 Half Size – 16 Side of the Architect’s Scale
Measure/Multiply: When measuring a line, double the measurement you find to get the actual dimension Half Size – 16 Side of the Architect’s Scale

8 Half Size – 16 Side of the Architect’s Scale
Measure/Multiply: When measuring a line, double the measurement you find to get the actual dimension 4 ¾ = 8 3/2 = 9 ½ Leave Double ÷ 2 It does not matter if the whole number is even or odd!! You multiply x 2 the same way for all mixed numbers!!

9 Half Size – 16 Side of the Architect’s Scale
Measure/Multiply: When measuring a line, double the measurement you find to get the actual dimension Measurement Actual Dimension X2 1-1/2” 2-3/4” 6-7/8”

10 Half Size – 16 Side of the Architect’s Scale
Measure/Multiply: When measuring a line, double the measurement you find to get the actual dimension Measurement Actual Dimension X2 1-1/2” 3” 2-3/4” 5-1/2” 6-7/8” 13-3/4”

11 Practice problems for measuring a line half size – multiply by 2
1) 3-3/4 x 2 = 7-1/2 2) 5-1/2 x 2 = 11 3) 4-5/8 x 2 = 9-1/4 4) 6-1/4 x 2 = 12-1/2 5) 7-3/8 x 2 = 14-3/4

12 Half Size – 16 Side of the Architect’s Scale
Draw/Divide: When marking/drawing a line, divide the actual dimension by 2 before you draw Half Size – 16 Side of the Architect’s Scale

13 Half Size – 16 Side of the Architect’s Scale
Draw/Divide: When marking/drawing a line, divide the actual dimension by 2 before you draw Half Size – 16 Side of the Architect’s Scale

14 Half Size – 16 Side of the Architect’s Scale
Draw/Divide: When marking/drawing a line, divide the actual dimension by 2 before you draw Actual Dimension Length of Line you Draw ÷2 1-1/2” 2-3/4” 6-7/8”

15 Half Size – 16 Side of the Architect’s Scale
Draw/Divide: When marking/drawing a line, divide the actual dimension by 2 before you draw Actual Dimension Length of Line you Draw ÷2 1-1/2” 3/4” 2-3/4” 1-3/8” 6-7/8” 3-7/16”

16 Practice problems for drawing a line half size – divide by 2
1) 5-3/4 ÷ 2 = 2-7/8 2) 3-1/16 ÷ 2 = 1-17/32 3) 2-1/2 ÷ 2 = 1-1/4 4) 4-7/8 ÷ 2 = 2-7/16 5) 7-1/4 ÷ 2 = 3-5/8 6) 9-3/8 ÷ 2 = 4-11/16

17 Half Size Practice - measuring lines half size
1 2 3 4

18 Fraction Tips for Half Size Measurements
Multiplication of Mixed Numbers by Two (4-5/8 x 2): Multiply whole number by two, leave the numerator, divide the denominator by two – SIMPLIFY if needed Division of Fractions by Two (3/4 ÷ 2): Leave the numerator and double the denominator Division of Mixed Numbers by Two when the Whole Number is EVEN (2-7/8÷2): Divide the whole number by two, then leave the numerator and double the denominator Division of Mixed Numbers by Two when the Whole Number is ODD (3-1/2÷2): Divide the whole number by two and write down only the whole number, add the numerator and the denominator to get new numerator, then double the denominator

19 Architect’s scale Sheet 1 – full size
Helpful hints: Measure from the outside edge of right line to outside edge of left line Name, date and seat number – should be LETTERED

20 Architect’s scale Sheet 2 – full size
Name, date and class period – should be LETTERED Label each tick mark (1/16, 1/8, 3/16, etc.)

21 Architect’s scale Sheet 3 – half size
Measure the line and then multiply the distance by 2 and record answer MEASURE - MULTIPLY Divide the distance by 2 before drawing a tick mark and make a mark that distance DRAW - DIVIDE

22 Architect’s scale Sheet 4 – half size
DRAW - DIVIDE Divide the distance by 2 before drawing a tick mark and make a mark that distance

23 Test Review – 4 never, never rules
Never draw a line using the edge of the scale Never mark on the scale Never hit the scale on anything Never touch the compass to the scale

24 Test Review – Length of shaded box – FULL SIZE
7-5/8 8-3/16

25 Test Review – Draw lines based on a measurement – FULL SIZE
3-7/8 1-5/16

26 Test Review – measure lines and record length – FULL SIZE
3-1/4 13/16

27 Test Review – Draw lines based on a measurement – half SIZE draw - divide
4-7/8 3-3/4 4-7/8 ÷ 2 = 2-7/16 3-3/4 ÷ 2 = 1-7/8

28 Test Review – measure lines and record length – half SIZE Measure - multiply
5-7/8 2-1/4 2-15/16 x 2 = 4-15/8 = 5-7/8 1-1/8 x 2 = 2-1/4

29 Test If, when measuring, the end falls in between two numbers, pick the one it is closest to – I WILL ACCEPT BOTH ANSWERS When done with the test, turn it in and work on your homework for next week.
