John 2:1-2 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding.
9
Jewish Wedding Typically a seven day celebration.
Guests would eat together and present the couple with gifts at the wedding feast. There would be singing and dancing as part of the evening celebrations after a big meal together. Relatives of the couple were usually put in positions of honor.
10
John 2:3-4 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.” 4 “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”
11
John 2:5-7 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” 6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. 7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.
12
Jesus had them fill 6 stone water jars
120 – 180 gallons of water H20

John 2:8-11 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet. ”They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out
14
John 2:8-11 the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.” 11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
15
Grape Juice or Wine? If we think Jesus made water into an intoxicating beverage we have to wrestle with the following implications: The guests would likely be drunk Mary would be regretting that they ran out of an intoxicating drink, and would be asking Jesus to make more of it.
16
Grape Juice or Wine? To make mom happy, Jesus would be making gallons of fermented wine, enough to keep the guest drunk for a long time. Jesus would be make intoxicating wine as his first miraculous sing that was supposed to “reveal His glory”.
17
Choice Wine? Choice wine was considered to be the best wine, which meant it had the highest sugar content. It was considered the sweetest. The sugar was not destroyed through fermentation. The cheaper wine was juice that was diluted with water to make it “spread”.
18
Choice Wine? The Roman writer Pliny affirms this as a wide custom of the time. He precisely states that the good wine called “sapa” was not fermented, but boiled down 1/3 to increase it’s sweet flavor. Pliny, Plutarch, and Horace all suggest that the best wine was what they called “harmless and innocent”.
19
Had to much to drink? The Greek word used here means, to be filled or satisfied, and has nothing to do with intoxication. The “cheaper” wine was brought out after the official wedding banquet, diluted down to save money, and so they would not run out.
