Poetry: Imagery Authors/Poets use imagery to evoke the reader's five senses, and to illustrate and elaborate on their ideas and feelings. Ex: Imagery of orange, red, hot, burning things in Lord of the Flies creates a figurative image of hell on the island. In poetry, we associate the use of imagery with the feelings that certain places or things evoke in the reader. Ex: Hell = Evil, we fear hell, hell gives us thoughts of demons, sins, pain, etc.
