Who Knows….. Two functions of the respiratory system?
1. ______________________________ 2. ______________________________
4
Respiratory System Functions:
1. To take in oxygen 2. To eliminate waste in the form of carbon dioxide
5
Human Body: Respiratory System
Parts of the respiratory system include: Larynx (vocal box) Trachea Bronchi Bronchioles Lungs Alveoli
6
Moving Air in and Out When you inhale (breathe in), the diaphragm and rib muscles contract. When you exhale (breathe out), these muscles relax. The diaphragm pushes upwards.
7
Alveoli The alveoli are moist, thin-walled pockets which are the site of gas exchange. This is where the oxygen enters the bloodstream and the carbon dioxide leaves!

Respiratory System Info:
Oxygen is essential to life. We use the oxygen we breathe and the food we eat to produce energy. Physical activity increases our need for energy; increasing the use of oxygen and nutrients. The body can store some of the things it needs to function. However, oxygen cannot be stored for more than a few minutes at a time. At rest the blood holds about a quart of dissolved oxygen, but it is constantly being used by the cells to produce energy during respiration. The respiratory system must work all of the time to supply enough oxygen to the body.
