9 SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES

10 RECAP OF OUR LAST STUDY From our last study, entitled “God rejects Saul”, we learnt that God commanded the destruction of Amalek as part of His retributive justice. But Saul watered down this instruction. Also, Saul who was humble when he was anointed became arrogant with the passage of time. His experience became more important to him than divine instructions from God. In spite of the clarity of God’s instructions, Saul disobeyed God. Believers should be totally focused on obedience to divine instruction in life and ministry.

11 TODAY’S STUDY: LESSON 733: DAVID ANOINTED KING
MEMORY VERSE: …… “Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah” (1 Samuel 16:13). TEXT: 1 Samuel 16:1-23

12 INTRODUCTION The negative turn of events leading to Saul’s rejection as king over Israel pained Samuel. He separated from Saul; but he did not stop interceding for him. This godly attitude is to be emulated by true believers. God on the other hand stopped Samuel from continual lamentation, and guided him to anoint David as Saul’s successor. We are to learn that the failure of one person cannot hinder the progress of God’s work. QUESTION 1: What can believers learn from Samuel’s disposition towards Saul and God’s instruction to him? 1 Samuel 15:10-11; 16:1.

13 GOD GUIDES SAMUEL 1 Samuel 16:1-10
In selecting the next king, Samuel made some error of judgement on who was to be anointed as the king. Situations like this highlight the fallibility of men. But, God who sees beyond deceptive outward appearances, led Samuel to anoint David as King. We should seek God’s guidance in every decision of life. God still guides those who rely on Him for guidance. QUESTION 2: Why is it necessary to pray and be guided by God when choosing people for important assignments? – Proverbs 31:30; Psalm 147:10,11; Isaiah 55:8,9, Luke 16:15.

14 THE PROMOTION AND ANOINTING OF DAVID 1 Samuel 16:11-13
The selection of David as king in preference to his seven older brothers tells us that God’s choice is not always according to human metrics such as rank or appearance. God has His own standards and David was His choice as King. David on his part did not manipulate his way to be king; rather, he was humble, obedient and focused on God even when he had to wait for many years before he eventually ascended the throne. QUESTION 3: Point out some lessons from the anointing of David – Psalm 89:20-24; Psalm 75:4-7.

15 DAVID’S MINISTRY BEFORE SAUL 1 Samuel 16:14-23
The Spirit of God left Saul, and an “evil spirit from God” troubled him. God has oversight over all events happening in the universe, but it was Saul’s sins and continual disobedience that opened the door for demonic oppression in his life. David’s music however brought him relief. Godly as well as good music refreshes and has healing powers. QUESTION 4: Explain the expression “an evil spirit from the Lord” – 1 Samuel 16:14; Matthew 12:43-45. QUESTION 5: State the benefits of good music – 1 Samuel 16:23; 2 Kings 3:14,15; 2 Chronicles 20:21-24; Acts 16:25,26.

16 CONCLUSION The choice of David as king to replace Saul highlights that no one is indispensable in God’s service. If we condone sin, God will find a better replacement to fulfil His purpose. David became king not because of his physical attributes but the state of his heart. He was a man after God’s heart: tender, obedient and focused on God. We also need to consider this in making life’s choices and depend on God for His guidance. God still guides those who rely on Him for guidance.

25 HYMN HEAVEN CAME DOWN (GHS 32)

26 HEAVEN CAME DOWN [GHS 32] 1. O what a wonderful, wonderful day,
Day I will never forget; After I'd wandered in darkness away, Jesus my Saviour I met. O what a tender, compassionate friend, He met the need of my heart; Shadows dispelling, with joy I am telling, He made all the darkness depart! 1.

27 Heaven came down and glory filled my soul,
When at the cross the Saviour made me whole; My sins were washed away And my night was turned to day! Heaven came down and glory filled my soul!

28 HEAVEN CAME DOWN [GHS 32] 2. Born of the Spirit with life from above
Into God's family divine, Justified fully thru Calvary's love, O what a standing is mine! And the transaction so quickly was made, When as a sinner I came, Took of the offer of grace He did proffer - He saved me, O praise His dear name! 2.

29 Heaven came down and glory filled my soul,
When at the cross the Saviour made me whole; My sins were washed away And my night was turned to day! Heaven came down and glory filled my soul!

30 HEAVEN CAME DOWN [GHS 32] 3. Now I've a hope that will surely endure
After the passing of time; I have a future in heaven for sure There in those mansions sublime. And it's because of that wonderful day, When at the cross I believed; Riches eternal and blessings supernal, From His precious hand I received. 3.

31 Heaven came down and glory filled my soul,
When at the cross the Saviour made me whole; My sins were washed away And my night was turned to day! Heaven came down and glory filled my soul! END OF HYMN
