1 Protests after Georgia Tech student shot by police

2 Violence erupted late Monday on the campus of the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta after a vigil for a student shot and killed by police. Protesting developed with chanting, marching and, ultimately, confrontations at the campus police headquarters. A campus police car burned after its windshield was smashed, and videos taken by people at the scene showed police handcuffing individuals who had been forced to the ground. Three arrests were made and two officers received minor injuries. Those arrested were charged with inciting a riot and battery of an officer. Scout Schultz was shot Saturday night after police responded to a 911 call, with the caller reporting a suspicious person on campus. The caller said the person -- described as a white male with long blond hair, white T-shirt and blue jeans, possibly intoxicated -- was holding a knife and possibly a gun. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation later said it appeared that Schultz was the one who made that 911 call. Cell phone video shows the officer repeatedly yelling at Schultz to put the knife down and not move. In the video, after Schultz takes a few steps forward, an officer opens fire. Three suicide notes were found in Schultz's dorm room.

3 In Other News Hurricane Maria, making its first landfall as a Category 5 storm, has hit with "widespread devastation." With the US territory of Puerto Rico and the US and British Virgin Islands now in its path, Maria's powerful punch has diminished slightly to a Category 4 after it hit Dominica Monday night. President Donald Trump is expected to issue harsh warnings to North Korea and Iran during his closely watched address to the United Nations today. Students returned to Freeman High School for the first time after a shooting last week left one student dead and three wounded. On Wednesday, 15-year-old Caleb Sharpe brought two firearms to school and opened fire, killing one student and wounding three others. Freeman High is located near Spokane, Washington.
