8.5 Variables both side of equation
Objective: students will be able to solve equations that have variables on both sides. They will need to determine how many solutions there will be for each problem.
2
Information How to solve 2 variable equation Isolate variable divide
If variable goes to zero: no solution. Ex: 4x + 3 = 4x – 1 If both sides of equation are equal then: all numbers are solutions. Ex: 4x + 1 = 4x + 1
3
Teacher Examples 5n – 2 = 3n + 6 8y + 4 = 11y – 17
4
Student Examples 25u + 74 = 23u + 92 14 + 5y = 50 – 4y
5
Teacher Examples 6x + 2 = 2(3x + 1) 5(2x + 1) = 10x
6
Student Examples 25t = 5(5t + 1) 7(2p + 1) = 14p + 7
7
Perimeters Find the perimeter of the square. X + 4 2x
8
Student Example Find the perimeters. Box 1 36 – 5x 4x Box 2 12x
